Look at the existing MSF - there's no room on that site to double the length of the maintenance bays. While the trains may be due for replacement after 30-40 years of use, the maintenance facility will have a longer lifespan than that, so replacing it so soon would be wasteful.

Our current train design is incompatible with PSDs though, as each unit is asymmetrical. There are also issues created by running the system in manual mode - it's harder to ensure alignment each time the train stops.

Regardless, I'm not sure what problem PSDs are expected to solve in our system. Track incursions aren't much of an issue with low platforms.

I got off the train at Bayview the other day and couldn't help but be immediately drawn towards this.





As of June 23rd we still have salt caked all over the platform? That is as surprising as it is painful. The lack of enclosed platforms and... are ALL the platform heaters broken or is that just Hurdman?

Anyhow. Here is a good snapshot of how some of our brand new infrastructure is going to age. I've noticed a lot of columns and railing bases and staircase edges showing a decent amount of rust already at many stations.

I'm no construction expert, but couldn't some kind of protective layer be placed around the base of the steel columns to protect against corrosion?

I'd guess it's already coated with rustproofing, but it's damaged. And/or the concrete isn't protected inside the concrete - so the salt and water absorbed into the concrete has gotten to work on it.

Been biking the Blair station the last few days and man, is it unpleasant. They have a decent bike parking plaza, but no cycling infrastructure improvements were made in any way, shape or form. Ditto for St. Laurent, which now has a bike locker (but you have to get a key and pay? Charge for bike parking, but no charge for massive, maintenance heavy park-and-rides) but zero cycling connections.

I've tweeted the councilor, RTG, the mayor, Ottawa Riverkeeper, and a biking twitter account about Hurdman Station several times.

The amount of salt caked on everything is absolutely astounding. On top of all the park benches, out into the fields/watershed surrounding the station, inside and up and down the elevator components, filling all of the surface drains, up and down all the stairs.

Of course nothing is galvanized, some of the stainless steel supporting the glazed panels is sh*tty stainless from a country that shall go unnamed, and is already corroding as well.

Not to mention the 'art' is covered in cobwebs, and some of the 'wood' panelling is also loose and/or corroded. Should age great.

The City isn't paying RTG for their maintenance contract, RTG claims that they SHOULD be paid despite ongoing deficiencies, and now nobody is there to clean up anything, ever.

Most stations look like a third-world country. Filth, urine, dirty glass, smells.

I agree. It's a pretty sorry state. You'd think they would design for the climate. i though the point of heated platforms was to remove the need for salt.

Even the "O" pylons (I assume those are OC's responsibility). The light at the Lyon Podium entrance has been out for years. The "O" had fallen, It was replaced, but not the light, nor the blue accessible entrance square.

We are all aware of the salt infiltration and rusting etc as discussed not more than a page ago.



Walking down the stairs at Hurdman today. I can assure you that this did not look like this last year.

I think we should document all of this degradation of our near and dear transit system in such a short order. Maybe all our photos and Exif data could be used one day in a court case.





It hurts my brain to think about all the engineering that went into fitting all of these pieces together so nicely but without any thought to how it will perform/function/weather.

A devoted thread to LRT deficiencies in any way shape or form could be helpful.

Any of the fellas over here ever try to take a leak at Hurdman? why is there no urinal.. and why is the toilet seat geared only towards accessibility?

Anyone take the LRT or buses last night after last night’s Canada Day show and fireworks? I was on my bike but from the looks of it, it seemed Pimisi station was a s#!tshow, they only had the east side entrance open. The Booth street bridge was a mess of barricades and people had little idea of where they were being funnelled to. Getting to buses on Albert was equally confusing, it did not seem like an efficient operation. Riding my bike along Scott, the rate of buses going through seemed low.

They closed Pimisi shortly before the fireworks at the request of OPS and event organizers because the venue had reached capacity.

They reopened the station for Eastbound travel after the fireworks were over.
