Pope Francis to have historic Truth and Reconciliation visit in central Alberta
June 23, 2022

Edmonton will serve as home base for Pope Francis during his visit to Western Canada, taking place July 24-27, as the Catholic Church strengthens its efforts to listen to, talk with and learn from residential school survivors, their families and their communities, and offer an apology for the role it played in the residential school system.

“We are pleased to play a supporting role in the Catholic Church’s journey towards reconciliation with First Nations, Métis and Inuit communities on Canadian soil,” said Andre Corbould, Edmonton’s City Manager. “Our city is deeply committed to fulfilling the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and we welcome Indigenous Peoples and communities from across Western Canada, with open arms, to this opportunity for progress and healing.”

The Vatican released its detailed itinerary of the visit in Alberta early this morning, available at papalvisit.ca. Pope Francis will visit the site of a former residential school in Maskwacîs and will travel to Lac Ste. Anne, a popular Indigenous pilgrimage site that draws up to 40,000 people each year.

When back in Edmonton, the Pope will celebrate mass at Commonwealth Stadium. Free tickets will be available in the coming days, with details and access to tickets through papalvisit.ca.

The papal visit in Canada is an initiative led by the Vatican and the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB). The City of Edmonton and its local partner, the Alberta Coordinating Committee, will provide support and specific services that ensure the safety and security of the Pope and the public.

As further details become available, they will be published on the City’s web page.

Well done Edmonton!

Relaunched grant program to help immigrants and refugees settle in Edmonton
June 23, 2022

For many immigrants and refugees, the barriers to full inclusion in the community are often significant and tend to be complex and almost always systemic. That is why the City of Edmonton is relaunching the Emerging Immigrant and Refugee Communities (EIRC) Grant Program in an effort to help newcomers overcome those barriers.

This program provides funding to Edmonton-based immigrant or refugee community organizations supporting community members in their initial stages of settling or integrating. Organizations must be a registered not-for-profit under any of the provincial or federal acts for at least one year.

A review of the program was completed in 2020 to better meet the needs of the community, and address shifting priorities and City outcomes.

Updates to the EIRC Grant Program include:
An increased emphasis on community development within ethnocultural communities.
Improvements to the application and reporting processes.
A reset of the funding opportunities to follow a developmental path:
Seed grants (up to $2,000), community impact ($2,001 up to $5,000) and community special project grants (from $5,001 to $25,000).
These new grant streams are in addition to the ongoing Space Rental Subsidy Grant.
The provision of support for any Edmonton-based immigrant or refugee “grassroots” organizations through a newly established Ethnocultural Capacity Building Collaborative, in partnership with the Edmonton Chamber of Voluntary Organizations. The Collaborative intends to offer support in areas such as:
Governance and volunteer leadership development
Financial management and grant applications
Program planning, implementation and evaluation
Strategic planning
Fiscal agent support, and more

This grant program contributes to the City’s goal of being more welcoming, equitable and inclusive to all Edmontonians, while also supporting grassroots immigrant and refugee communities who are in the process of settling and integrating.

Visit edmonton.ca/NewcomersGrants for more information on grants, program eligibility and the application process.

^ what is an Economic Intelligence Unit?

Sounds like an oxymoron.

Garbage survey to sell an agenda.

Totally meaningless publicity on most national and local news stations across Canada and likely in other key markets; I must have seen it a half dozen times.

These, regardless of what you might think, create buzz and generate interest from outside investors, entrepreneurs and folks looking to move to a more affordable city that can still provide them a good quality of life.

Not having Edmonton there IS ABSOLUTELY AN ISSUE.

I would agree, Edmonton would rank high. Lets be honest, living in Alberta and Canada, we are very fortunate. I know we forget that. Regardless of what your political stripe is, we have it so much better than other places. Always room for improvement though.

Having worked at the City for a long time, they like to get their name into things so they can win awards and send out news releases. This one survey is by The Economist so perhaps more of a European angle and Calgary is more known City over there. In last years ranking, I think Detroit was in the 70's out of the top 100. Certainly, Edmonton would top them by a country mile if we were a city considered for the ranking which I think we are not.

Unless it is a useless survey like this one I posted before.

What does Edmonton need to do to get on the Economist top 100?

Is this an issue that the Economist flatly refuses to place Edmonton on the rankings, or does Edmonton not really care?

Does Edmonton put it’s name in the hat to even be ranked?

unpopular opinion...

I'm okay with Edmonton being the unnoticed sibling. Making her more attractable to others will only continue to raise housing prices to even more unaffordable levels. Not having Edmonton 'pay to play' in this silly ranking things that articles are based on, that Calgary likes to always boost about, is quite alright in my mind. Only those with self-esteem issues about their city really care if or where they rank. Those with confidence know how great their city is, and many of us would prefer to keep it a bit of a secret.

Fantastic to see, but why did our Downtown/Central Edmonton become forgotten? Some tough questions and some folks needing to be held accountable.

I tend to agree - creating any 'hype' around a place and having people start moving there as a result, as people from Ontario are doing with moves to Calgary for example, increase the unaffordability of a place. I'm happy with Edmonton remaining affordable while maintaining an excellent quality of life that is within reach of most, which can't be said for the GTA or Lower Mainland due to housing costs.

People do find out where Edmonton is. The population base between both Calgary and Edmonton are pretty close in regional terms. The population growth between both cities is also close. With all its flaws, Edmonton is still doing ok.

Not on the real jobs front, it isn't. For almost the last 40 years now. Public sector jobs don't count. They're a massive drag on GDP.

Population doesn't tell any compelling story.

Exactly.

Edmonton and Calgary are VERY different cities, investment markets, globally perceived in different pools and still cities with significant deltas from a perception standpoint.

Not all bad news, but different tiers.

A real job? So a public sector job is fake? A “massive drag on GDP”?

What BS.

The so call “real jobs” will end up in Toronto or Vancouver or overseas in a matter of years. Many have no longevity, zero benefits, and crappy pension plans. I respect all jobs, but I’ll take a city of “fake” public sector jobs and refinery/construction jobs, over jobs that can be displaced at any time.
Wishing all the best for both cities.

Um, you realise, public sector jobs can only exist so long as there's a private sector to pay for them through tax revenues??

Um, you realize, public sector workers pay taxes too. Not just private sector. . Some of you guys just can’t see the advantage of cities with a large public sector workforce.
And that’s too bad.
