Some great angles there.

that first Vancouver angle is spectacular.. you get a great sense of the urban fabric of the city and it's not an angle that we often see here.

Ottawa as largish generic Ontarian/Canadian city.

The Ottawa most residents interact with, the Ottawa they most experience. One could live there and completely forget one is living in the capital of a G7 country. Fall asleep on the Confederation Line though from Lees through Pimsi and one might just think that London, Ontario really has come a long way with their transit system.

It pretends to play a global capital on low-budget TV, but once the lights go down and the makeup comes off, it's plain-Jane Ontario.

Did that Holiday Inn ever go by another name? I vaguely recall staying at a hotel right next to St. Laurent Shopping Centre about 30 years ago but I don't think it was a Holiday Inn... and now it's just killing me

I agree for the most part. Outside Downtown and the streetcar suburbs, and maybe Alta Vista/Mooney's Bay (lots of trees and greenery, some good mid-century office campuses), Ottawa is quite bland. Even those central areas, though nice, they are not at the same level as other world capitals or even many North American cities.

I'd argue that Ottawa even outside those specific areas is still a pretty decent city by (North) American standards and compared to cities of its size on this continent.

Most American cities in Ottawa's class were badly damaged by decades of neglect. Many in fact have better bones and architecture across the city than Ottawa does but generally the rejuvenation that's taken place has been on fairly modest scale.

So Ottawa is still a better, nicer city than most of them today.

In terms of global capitals I don't think it's fair to compare Ottawa to G7 capital cities but smaller western capitals are better peers for Ottawa. Take your pick: there are quite a few of them in Europe.

Ottawa has a beautiful "official" core district (though all capitals tend to have this) but outside of that, as acknowledged already Ottawa still doesn't compare as well.

I've mentioned before on here that these days Quebec City comes pretty darn close to matching or surpassing Ottawa for overall capitalesque grandeur.

There is also the way your average Ottawa denizen dresses and stuff like their pursuits, but that's another, more controversial subject. Perhaps for another thread.

Brussels comes to mind as a comparable.
