so yeah, getting rid of a factual museum exhibit to rewrite history is about par for the course.
“Hop a ride with someone going by”? Has he never heard of the Highway of Tears?!

Vancouver Art Gallery - UDP Review

Urban Design Panel Recommends Open Heart Surgery For Vancouver’s Landmark Art Gallery

688 Cambie St (DP-2021-00171) – (Vancouver Art Gallery)
Even reaching this Urban Design Panel review could be seen as a win for the plans to build a new Vancouver Art Gallery, as it’s been six years since its pre-application open house. That doesn’t account for the time spent searching through 12 locations before this site was selected in Larwill Park, the heart of Vancouver’s planned cultural district. Still, this institution’s leadership proclaimed this project’s future was nearly certain now thanks to the Audain family’s $100-million donation last year.

The new CEO clearly seemed ready to celebrate, as they boasted about the changes that had taken place since they had defeated their rival in 2020. Of course, these volunteer were prepared to slow things down, and chastised the planning department for not scheduling more time to review what they felt would become the most important cultural landmark in our city. Which is saying something as, for some of the attendees, it was well after 2am before this meeting ended.

Yeah, how about NO.

Umm yeah, agreed. That would make it a little difficult to access the parking lot under the QE Theatre. But then the city is always a bit clueless about how their civic facilities operate.

It is bizarre how the city's planners seem hellbent on turning huge swathes of the metro population from visiting downtown Vancouver.

The suggestion is that the part of Cambie between the QE Plaza and the Art gallery could be closed. Access to the parking lot under the theatre, and back-of-house wouldn't be affected. It would mean losing the Brown's / nightclub building, but these aren't short-term plans. The architects of the gallery need to know, as it affects how the building is designed on that stretch of street.

Given that Brown's just recently signed the lease then it won't be happening anytime soon. It would also be an unwarranted butchering of the original design. While it is no Lincoln Center it is a very large midcentury landmark for Vancouver.

No doubt the city bureaucrats thinks all 2,929 seats at the QE and the 668 at the Playhouse will be filled by bike-riding patrons.

I'm more concerned about the buses. The 5, 6 and 17 all depend on that one block.

The comments on the retail enclosure allign with my thoughts - but not because of future expansion across the street.
I think the enclosed retail "cloister" creates a private space that's too exclusionary / exclusive.
I know the reasons why:
  • flexibility for private VAG outdoor events
  • protection from crime in the neighbourhood
  • control of the plaza over protests/large public gatherings

DPB - Approved

After a long journey, the Vancouver Art Gallery has won the Development Permit Board’s approval. They commended this future “landmark” destination in our city for voluntarily meeting #PassiveHouse design standards, but cautioned there was still work left to do.

That includes figuring out how to handle the adjacent block of Cambie now that city staff have realized it can’t be closed, & integrated with Queen Elizabeth Theatre as was hoped. Still, it might be possible to thin this road to provide a wider sidewalk, & accommodate transit.

Yet, an “unusual” move by one of the Board’s advisory members means there will be at least one less task to finish. Their protests relaxed a condition that would have “diminished” & removed the roof of the main threshold to a plaza several times the size of Shangri-La’s Offsite.

Bravo, let's all congratulate city staff for recognizing the obvious. However they seem to have done an admirable job of narrowing it so busses can't dwell there. Where will they send them?

Do buses (sp) park up in the part of Cambie shown in the render? In future they'll have a parking lane further north, just as they do today, and exactly like the image shows if you scroll up.

At least that rendering has cafe tables on the sidewalk outside of the podium courtyard.
Presumably there will be a cafe entrance off the street.

"Fundraising for a proposed $400-million Vancouver Art Gallery (VAG) has now exceeded $280M"
This whole thing sounds like a pipe dream.

Maybe they'll shift over some of the Royal BC Museum money for it?

Seems pretty far along to me? A few rich donors away from making it happen. Those big egos always want to be the one that made it possible.
