All EU nations have full open skies with Canada. The UK bilateral is the same. The restrictions come with maximum slot allotments.

Canada and the UK do have an Open Skies agreement as part of The Blue Sky Policy from Transport Canada. Meaning it allows any number of carriers to operate both direct and indirect services between Canada and the UK. Airlines choose the routes to serve, the frequency of the service and the prices of flights, without any restrictions.

BA (as per your example), would need slots at LHR to operate a flight to YOW... which they have lots of. They would just need to reduce, eliminate, or juggle their slot schedule to allow such a flight. As well as finding the right aircraft... they learned that the B767 wasn't the right fit for YYC.... but then the B787 was too premium heavy, and thus left that market. Air Canada is our best bet for anything LHR I think (B787-8)

Iceland is also full Open Skies with Canada.

I guess this is less useful with Icelandair only flying to Pearson.

They fly to YUL seasonally as well, so theoretically you could fly YTZ-YUL-KEF-— or something, but you're right. The direct out of YYZ is a lot more convenient

Well, an update on my flights this July. We decided to book YOW-EWR-MCO to avoid the mayhem that is Pearson these days....and to clear customs in Ottawa. Well, it looks like we might be in for some trouble:

Quote:
United Airlines will cut 12% of Newark flights in effort to tame delays
- United will cut about 50 flights a day out of Newark Liberty International Airport to help reduce delays.
- United has blamed the delays on airport construction and capacity constraints.
- The reductions are solely for domestic routes, starting July 1.

I know this is not YOW-specific news, but EWR is probably our best connecting option outside of Pearson! It will be interesting to see if it affects our flights and to see if it has any impact on delay issues. From the articles I read it sounds like they are cancelling flights with multiple daily to the same destination so maybe we will still be OK

I imagine many of those cancellations would already be happening now, given that July is only a few days away now.
I've got flights to (and out of) EWR in September on UA so hopeful they aren't affected.

No they haven't announced the affected flights yet. I looked at EWR-MCO and there have been 2 Thursday cancellations over the last 2 weeks. Otherwise, the flights have been only a few minutes delayed on average. We should know in a couple of days whether itinerary adjustments need to be made.

If the cancellation count today does not exceed 4, today will be the most departures in a single day since the start of the pandemic.

Today's departure count: 73

Today's cancellation count: 3

-YUL down from about 8 to 7 daily
-YYZ down from about 10 to 9 daily
-YYZ from about 3.5 to 2.3 daily

Staffing shortages

Ottawa should offer developers tax breaks to help revive area around airport, says city committee
It recommended a proposal to make about 100 hectares of land around the airport part of a "community improvement plan."

Jacquie Miller, Ottawa Citizen
Jun 28, 2022 • 2 hours ago • 2 minute read

The City of Ottawa should give tax breaks to businesses that develop around the Ottawa International Airport to help recovery following the devastating impact of the pandemic on air travel and to boost the local economy, says the city’s finance and economic development committee.

It recommended a proposal to make about 100 hectares of land around the airport part of a “community improvement plan.”

Tenants who rent land from the airport authority in that area would be eligible for the tax break if they developed or redeveloped sites with projects that increased the assessed property value by at least $250,000. Businesses would be eligible for a grant that would lower their municipal tax bill.

For example, a new project that increased property assessment by $10 million would be eligible for a grant of $4.25 million over 25 years. The maximum cumulative grant for any project would be $25 million.

If all the land was developed, the airport could receive more than $10 million in rent, which could be reinvested in operations that might help increase passenger volumes and increase the number of direct flights in and out of Ottawa, councillors heard at the committee meeting on Tuesday.

The pandemic had a devastating impact on the airport, according to a staff presentation. The number of passengers dropped by 77 per cent over two years — from 5.1 passengers in 2019 to only 1.2 million passengers in 2021.

The number of direct flights offered at the airport has also dropped and international flights were diverted to other cities because of pandemic restrictions.

Increasing the number of direct flights and helping the airport recover is key to attracting new businesses and boosting tourism and the economy, said delegations from Invest Ottawa and Ottawa Tourism.

The airport industry is highly competitive, and other cities and regions offer incentives to boost development, said Mark Laroche, president and CEO of the Ottawa International Airport Authority.

The tax break would help Ottawa attract more development, more quickly, he said.

Several councillors were skeptical, saying they needed more evidence that the tax break would spur development that would not go ahead anyway.

Coun. Jeff Leiper said he was reluctant to forgo city tax revenue. He wondered if a city tax break would be a deciding factor for a business considering development around the airport.

Laroche said he was convinced the tax break would have an impact.

City council will make the final decision.

Yesterday AC342/345 (YVR-YOW-YVR) were served by a B789, looking ahead it appears that turn will be served by a B789 daily starting July 1st through September 15th, similar to last summer.

For anyone interested, this small, Fredericton based data firm, created a Flight Cancellations and Delays interactive tracker for seven Canadian airports including YOW.

Over the last week from June 22-28, YOW has had 9% of their scheduled flights cancelled, 41% 20 mins+ late, and 49% on-time/early.

The site even breaks it down by route!

Give it a click... a really cool way to see how data can be scraped and used!

Air Canada to make 'meaningful reductions' to summer flight schedule
Airline president blames 'unprecedented and unforeseen strains on all aspects of the global aviation system'

CBC News
Posted: Jun 29, 2022 8:37 PM ET | Last Updated: 2 hours ago

Air Canada will cut dozens of daily flights this summer as the airline grapples with a series of challenges amid soaring demand for travel.

"Regrettably, things are not business as usual in our industry globally, and this is affecting our operations and our ability to serve you with our normal standards of care," Michael Rousseau, the airline's president and CEO, said in a statement released Wednesday.

"The COVID‑19 pandemic brought the world air transport system to a halt in early 2020. Now, after more than two years, global travel is resurgent, and people are returning to flying at a rate never seen in our industry."

Rousseau said those factors are causing "unprecedented and unforeseen strains on all aspects of the global aviation system," leading to flight delays and crowded airport spaces.

And it's also spurring the airline to make "meaningful reductions" to its summer schedule "in order to reduce passenger volumes and flows to a level we believe the air transport system can accommodate," he said.

Peter Fitzpatrick, an airline spokesperson, told CBC News that the changes would see Air Canada reduce its schedule by 77 round trips — or 154 flights — on average, each day during the months of July and August.

Prior to these reductions, the airline was operating about 1,000 flights per day.

"Three routes will be temporarily suspended between Montreal and Pittsburgh, Baltimore and Kelowna and one from Toronto to Fort McMurray," Fitzpatrick said.

Fitzpatrick said "most" flights affected by the changes are out of its Toronto and Montreal hubs.

"These will be mostly frequency reductions, affecting primarily evening and late-night flights by smaller aircraft, on transborder and domestic routes," he said.

But he said "international flights are unaffected, with a few timing changes to reduce flying at peak times and even out the customer flow."

Rousseau, the airline president, said Air Canada did what it could to prepare for these challenges, but it has to adjust its operations to the current circumstances.

"This was not an easy decision, as it will result in additional flight cancellations that will have a negative impact on some customers," Rousseau said.

"But doing this in advance allows affected customers to take time to make other arrangements in an orderly manner, rather than have their travel disrupted shortly before or during their journey, with few alternatives available."

Rousseau offered his "sincere apologies" to customers for any delays they have faced or will face.

"I also assure you that we very clearly see the challenges at hand, that we are taking action, and that we are confident we have the strategy to address them," he said. "This is our company's chief focus at every level."

A majority of domestic flights have been delayed at some of the country's busiest airports in recent days, according to the analytics firm Data Wazo.

Data Wazo says 54 per cent of flights to six large airports — Montreal, Calgary, Toronto's Pearson and Billy Bishop airports, Ottawa and Halifax — were bumped off schedule in the seven days between June 22 and 28.

Some 38 per cent of the flights were delayed while 16 per cent were scrapped altogether.

Airlines and the federal government have been scrambling to respond to scenes of endless lines, flight disruptions and daily turmoil at airports — particularly at Pearson — a problem the aviation industry has blamed on a shortage of federal security and customs officers.

According to this new interview with the CEO of Porter, they are actually on track with their original plans to start flying the E2's this year. Apparently they are in the later stages of finalizing their plans and having the E2's approved in Canada.
