Do you consider High Park in Toronto a waste of space? Mont Royale in MTL? Central Park in NYC, Plaine d'Abraham in Quebec city? All big cities should have a central urban park.

Difference is, we have plenty of large parks already nearby. I would be open to it if there wasn't a Lebreton Flats Park and Pindigen Park right there. It is right there. You know what is also a small distance away? Victoria Island Park. I am not going to count Ottawa River South Shore Riverfront Park but it's close near Tunneys.

There doesn't need to be that much park space in an area that should be effectively utilized and densified. This district doesn't need to be that big. Half the size is fine. I am not saying to remove it entirely but it needs to be lessened because of the two parks already right there. If there wasn't Lebreton Flats Park, then that's a different story.

I'm pretty happy with how much total space was allocated for the park district but I do consider it a shame how much the parkway alignment cheapens/restricts the space and limits access to the waterfront. Maybe in a later revision of the park the parkway can be reimagined to be less imposing on the surrounding area.

Lebreton Flats park isnt really a park its an empty flat field for events. Pindigen is more of a corner plaza and will ultimately disappear and be developed with towers according to the lebreton flat masterplan

Which means they can easily be redeveloped for what is being proposed. It doesn't need to just be a flat field for events. Half of Pindigen is being retained with the towers implemented.

I was reviewing the plan, apparently there's a goal in mind to have a beach area and boardwalks area near the Nepean Inlet. I would very much enjoy having those incorporated as part of the Parks District for sure.

Albert will become our high-street. Add the M+M/Rimap development at Lyon to that list. Even Place de Ville (though it has seen better days) and World Exchange, James Flaherty, the NAC, Convention Centre, which are all pretty solid for their eras. And west along Scott, we have other decent towers proposed and u/c.

Hope the 70s townhomes south of the arena might be redeveloped one day. I believe they are all owned, so much tougher to do than rentals.

On the park component, many people point to the Central Experimental Farm, the Chaudière Islands (those who opposed to Zibi), Gatineau Park, the Parkways, the barren Bluesfest Park as Ottawa's "Central Park", but the realty is none of these are all that accessible to residents and and workers in the core. They are all a fair distance from significant density near the core of the city or tourist destinations. This park space at LeBreton will be surrounded by major attractions and thousands of residents/workers. This area can be our Central park if done right.

Maybe the challenges of building in that spot are significant enough to not do so, which gives us an opportunity to make something of it that can really improve the quality of life and the environment in the area.

It irks me so much when people point to something like Central Park as evidence that we should have grassy, open spaces in Ottawa.

What Central Park offers is much more than park space, there's;
  • -boat/canoe rentals
  • -kid's playground
  • -skating rink
  • -baseball fields
  • -tennis courts
  • -bistro
  • -zoo
  • -outdoor amphitheatre

I'd be more than aligned if we can learn to ANIMATE our green spaces rather than leaving them all as open grass fields and calling it a day.

From the early renders I'm optimistic on the Lebreton piece and hope we can get it right.

I agree, it needs to be much more than grass and trees. An urban beach, kayaking/canoeing (too close to the falls maybe?), food services, washrooms, interactive art, small concert area, playground... you name it. I imagine something like a mini Chicago Millennium Park.

If we could get all those built within the next 5 years... that area's infrastructure and identity will be beautiful. I hope we can see us close to finalizing Zibi and Lebreton within the next decade.

I love the Dream Towers and 900 Albert but I really like Adiosoke and the design for the new Sens area too. Just great all around.

Exactly this. Exactly this is why I am annoyed by that "district". It doesn't add value like what a Central Park really does do lol.

We need this to serve LeBreton and Zibi since trains crossing the river will be so far from the centre of the area at Portage and (maybe, one day) William Commanda. Stops at Pimisi, the Ward Museum, Chaudière Island, Zibi Tramway Station and maybe deeper into Hull.

Deadline for applications on part of the Flats District is up. 4 lots basically and all are good to go at the same time. Construction will not begin until 2024...

Gotta wonder what's going on with Mr. Denley here. I'm no fan per se but he's usually not that dumb.

I don't know but I am guessing that he lives somewhere in Kanata/Stittsville and is upset that it will take him longer to get to/from games. What he is totally ignoring is that it will only take longer to get to/from games for those who live Kanata/Stittsville (or west of there). For everyone else, it will be either similar or faster. If you consider that Kanata/Stittsville has an estimated population of 138,900, which is only 13% of the city's population or 10% of the CMA's population.
