The city/WPS have been inundated with complaints from ppl in the village (mostly the towers) of noise complaints from the Beer Can. Would not be surprised if they decided not to allow this to avoid it even more lol.

Osborne St is in a pitiful state especially around the Village it’s completely gone to shit. I’ve never seen so many for lease signs on the area and it seems like Bridgwater Centre has more pedestrian activity these days. Can the city please realize turning our most vibrant street into a 4 lane thoroughfare was a terrible idea even in hindsight?

There needs to be a serious road diet and the number of lanes for cars needs to be cut in half. Imo a Diamond lane is all the street needs to get its momentum back. They also should reduce the speed limit to 30 to quiet the engines guzzling through the village and make it somewhat more pedestrian friendly. More importantly they must get rid of that slip lane going onto River Ave and dedicate that lane to AT infrastructure. The bridge also needs to add actual AT infrastructure instead of that shy offset being utilized as a terrible excuse for a painted gutter. 6 lanes for cars is once again completely unnecessary and an inefficient use of space (like 99% of our roads). With gas prices increasing exponentially the city needs to act immediately but unfortunately the clowns running the city have completely checked out until the election.

Those 3 mid rises getting built on Osborne need to perform a miracle just to get it back to pre-Covid.

Edit: Another implementation they should consider next summer is have it apart of the open streets program.

Maybe that's not the problem.

I brought someone to Kawaii Crepe the other day because I really liked it a few years ago. Two crepes. $34.00. And then the tip of course. So $40.00. And my crepe sucked and was maybe worth $5 if you're lucky. Cheese wasn't melted and it was minimal. Just fucking terrible.

I will never go back.

Also, Osborne has been a thoroughfare, such as it is, for decades, since it has existed really. I can't see that changing. There are no freeways here.

It's going to be a very brave politician to enact change to that legacy.

The busses used to deposit a lot of pedestrians directly on the high street and limited space available for cars.

If you want to see Osborne thrive, close it to cars between River and Stradbrook, widen the sidewalks, and double the frequency on the 16, 18, and 60 busses.

That's a shame about Kawaii Crepe though. That place started slipping when they started chasing suburban expansion--as does every Winnipeg restaurant.

I really wish a good hotel would get built in Osborne Village (Mere hotel quality). The hotel options outside of downtown are pretty lacking and I'm just so done with Airbnb.

Totally agree. In some respects it's amazing that a hotel was never built in that area. Seems like a good location in that it's a nice, lively neighbourhood, the kind of place that would appeal to people visiting as it's one of the few spots in Winnipeg where you could walk outside of a hotel door and see a nice array of restaurants, bars, shops, etc. A hotel would have also boosted those same restaurants and merchants too.

Considering how many hotels were built around town over the last 20 years it's hard to believe that no one built one in Osborne Village.

The fire hall would be a great location for a hotel. And they could rebuild the vendor.

If I was recommending a place for someone to stay in Winnipeg it would certainly be a hotel on Osborne instead of downtown.

the giant pit at osborne station where the robo-garage and airbnb complex will never actually be built would be a good spot especially after that new building goes in just north of confusion corner to create more of a 'strip' along the southern end of osborne. right next to transit that takes you most places, walkable to osborne and south osborne. could catalyze some redevelopment at confusion corner, which is massively underdeveloped

as for a vendor though, isn't the government looking at allowing vendors without an associated hotel? the bad old days of hotels existing as requirements for booze selling are hopefully on the way out

My favourite hotel experiences in other cities were never in downtowns but in the urban neighbourhoods surrounding downtowns.

I agree, a boutique hotel at one of the corner lots on Osborne and Stradbrook would be amazing. A regular banner hotel would also maybe work as part of a larger development by the burger king and Osborne Station. It'd be so nice to bookend Corydon with something substantial-ish and as a visitor it'd be nice to either stroll down Osborne or Corydon, or go check out some of the nice restaurants in South Osborne.

In some ways, a total TNS-like dense redevelopment of the Confusion Corner island with hotel, residential space and commercial space would be the holy grail for Osborne Village. It would form a hub between the Village, Corydon and South Osborne, and provide an anchor point for the Village itself.
