Summerhill Station

The land development permit has now been issued. This should break ground soon.

Anyone know what’s being built on the southeast corner of Hank Aaron and Georgia Ave. The property was for sale last week. This week it has construction fencing (FS360 Construction) around it. I’ve heard nothing in neighborhood meeting news nor seen anything posted. For those old timers it’s where the KFC once stood. Please don’t be a fast food restaurant…..

The 12 story Atlanta Skyline Apartments are under construction on Hank Aaron and the Beltline SST at University. The amount of construction/apartments along this part of the trail that isn’t even paved yet is unreal. The whole area is transforming and densifying in a matter of a few years. I never thought I’d see this in my lifetime. The city is truly on fire everywhere within the city limits.

This would look SO much better if they bricked it all the way up. It would be a pretty classy building. As is, the base is nice.

Architects love a change in exterior materials. General contractors hate it. Every change is surface is a water intrusion risk. The issue is twofold - first you have a gap that has to be sealed and protected perfectly. Water will find the smallest hole/point of intrusion and take hold. Second, not only do you have to be perfect but you're often working with multiple subcontractors. The mason doesn't always do the stucco/EIFS, add siding and its likely a third subcontractor. The contractor that does the exterior sheathing. And that's on top of the typical risk you have at the roof and windows/doors (multiple other contractors). This is aside from aesthetics - which people can and do have different views.

MARTA scales back Summerhill BRT route amid rising costs

https://www.bizjournals.com/atlanta/news...cx_testVariant=cx_3&cx_artPos=0#cxrecs_s

Quote:

MARTA's Summerhill bus rapid transit route could now cost $91.3 million, more than 40% higher than earlier estimates, according to a presentation delivered at a committee meeting for the transit agency on Thursday. Construction is now expected to begin in April 2023 instead of August of this year. The route likely won't be in full operation until July 2025, nearly a year later than originally projected.

The agency's first deployment of bus rapid transit – in which buses run mostly in dedicated lanes with traffic signal prioritization – is planned to connect South Downtown to the Atlanta BeltLine. Five electric buses will run from Hank Aaron Drive and Capitol Avenue to MLK Jr Drive Southwest and Mitchell Street.

MARTA's staff has identified ways to shave upwards of $14 million from project costs, such as removing two bus stations where Memorial Drive meets Capitol Avenue and Trinity Avenue. Other cost-saving measures include removing road paving from the scope of the project, minimizing the use of special paint to distinguish bus-only lanes from mixed-traffic lanes and using a transit signal priority system provided by Georgia Department of Transportation.

I wouldn't mind some sort of shakeup, MARTA is incapable of doing anything anywhere in anyone's lifetime.

So, the article says they have cut the transit signal priority system provide by GDOT. Does that mean they are using another system? If not, don’t build the damn thing without one. It’s just another bus without prioritization and will have horrible ridership numbers. Being a Grant Park resident, I’ve been excited about this new line. However if it’s not done right, it’s just a waste like the streetcar. It will doom Marta from getting more support in the future.
