Hold my hand. We're going to the Conference Finals.

We have the underdog role going forward after beating the Kings. It seems much easier to play instead of being the favourite. Avs will be an exciting series.

Really want to see Nuge and McD go all the way

30,000 + tickets sold for tonight's preseason against the Stamps with proceeds going to help support Ukraine efforts.

Hope to see you all there!

Good Job by the Elks on getting things turned in the front office but winning on the field is all that counts.

We will see how that part comes together.

Canadian Cycling Championships June 23-27 2022

Watch out for this in a few weeks. There's a chance we will see a few of our pro riders from Euro based teams. A couple racing the Tour De France will not be here but the rest should.

White ave on the Monday 27 should be fun as well. the Crit is like roller derby near the end.

Also if you want to ride the road race course there is the Urban Fondo Sunday

Edmonton Urban Fondo (on the Canadian Nationals course)
28km, 56km or 80km

June 16th FIFA will be making its announcement of host cities for the 2026 World Cup. Sounds like the two Canadian cities will be Vancouver and Toronto. Edmonton is out.

maybe this should be in the airport thread?

because i'm pretty sure the lack of flights and good connections more than anything else keeps us off their acceptable destination radar, no pun intended.

furthermore, it's probably a much bigger problem because at least fifa's radar is high profile enough to be on our radar while there are myriad other things we lose that aren't even on our radar. no one goes - or stays - anywhere that's not convenient to get to or from.

i will be pleasantly surprised to be wrong but it would be a surprise.

Toronto is the business center of Canada and Vancouver is the most beautiful city in Canada.

Where does that leave Edmonton?

Out of the picture.

Maybe it should be in the provincial politics thread on how the CONSERVATIVE government kicked Edmonton in the testicles AGAIN with their poison pill demands they made of FIFA. No doubt this wil get them some votes elsewhere in the province.

^ no one should be surprised here.

when Vancouver was asked to jump back in, it was pretty clear that FIFA didn't like the Edmonton bid.

Considering the total flip-flip the BC government did, all of this is political everywhere.

That’s brutal!
Totally un-fair - you guys (and in a broader sense Alberta) deserve at least three of the games.

That’s bullshit.
Commonwealth is the best venue in the country for this.
So political - it drives me nuts.
As I said - at least do 3 games in Edmonton.

well, actually it’s not…

the stands start further back from the field/pitch edge because they built to allow full track and field events to be staged on the sidelines.

media/broadcast facilities are mediocre.

the concourse finishing from the asphalt to the poor lighting, never mind the offerings and washrooms, are embarrassing.

I attend many football games at Commonwealth and think it is a beautiful stadium to watch a game at. As for the concourse, it’s not embarrassing. Its a stadium that is used maybe 15 times a year, hard to justify a big upgrade. The field and seating areas are very nice.

even accepting what you’ve stated, that doesn’t make it “the best venue in the country” for fifa to present world cup soccer…

Opportunity cost.

Vancouver showcases the sport, the lifestyle, the marketing and the experience in a better way.

As mentioned though, it looks like we are being challenged by other US cities rather than Van for in or outs.

Getting to Edmonton should not be a hurdle. Its one extra hop in most cases. Who knows, hopefully by then we do have more flights from Europe, US and Elsewhere. I agree, I have seen soccer matches from Commonwealth and its a fine venue. Lots of European pitches have tracks around their stadium. Putting in grass in Vancouver's stadium is going to be risky. It pisses me off as think the people of Edmonton would embrace this more than Vancouverites would.

I am not saying it is the best venue in the country. Vancouver and Toronto were the rights choices. To say that parts of our venue are embarrassing is not accurate or fair. We are not in a position as a city to host a world event such as the World Cup.

Edmonton is not in Qatar or Russia where bids for such events are financed by the national government. Here, we don't understand that you get a chance to showcase your city and your brand in history. So, it is a much harder climb for Edmonton to convince politicians and taxpayers to complete overhaul the stadium.

I went to both qualifying games in November last year. Commonwealth, simply put, is 30 years behind what new stadia around the world look like.

They keep talking about the turf....But this place needs a major redo.

I knew right when Vancouver was asked to jump back in that FIFA did not like the Edmonton proposal. Missed opportunity. The North American bid was announced 4 years ago. So much could have been done between then and now to bring the facility up to a decent standard when the FIFA team showed up. Instead, they were still trying to obtain assurance from the province to pay the minimum.

Totally mishandled by the City and all the affiliated useless agencies such as Explore Edmonton, Global Edmonton, etc....
