Yeah, it is all done due to cost. Ugly screens like on Tesla cost next to nothing to produce and bolt on the dash and put some unresponsive capacitive software buttons on it, that are hidden deep in a cluttered menu. It is not only awful UX, also dangerous. Actually, most car manufacturers do better job with this than Tesla with more integrated screens and some physical buttons, but they are all bad nonetheless.
