Yup; I think that's what I miss most from living near there.

We loved walking down to Kits, Jerico or Spanish with a few bevies, blanket and just enjoy those wonderful evenings of bliss.

This is a great photo, and the skyline looks imposing, but there aren't any nice looking buildings in here. Stantec is alright I guess and it's by far the nicest tower in that shot. Too bad. I visit edmonton once every 1-2 years, and lately I'm encouraged by the densification and redevelopment of the city's ugly stucco SFH / bungalow neighbourhoods. Malls are being redeveloped and upgraded (I'm thinking mostly of my old stomping grounds in Bonnie Doon), large swaths of the city are being linked by the new LRT and the new infill developments are quite nice actually. However, the downtown is not going in the right direction aesthetically. The ice district is fine but is very corporate and cold looking. Edmonton has tons of potential. The new central park and surrounding dev around the old airport is going to be a make or break for that city.

2 years ago I was in Edmonton for a few weeks and then I went down to Calgary for the first time in probably 15 years, and I was shocked to see just how noticeably nicer and sleeker the new developments looked compared to Edmonton. I wonder if this is a financial issue or a cultural issue in the development community.

Manulife is pretty nice even though it's partially hidden. I actually prefer it to Stantec personally.

Manulife was actually my favourite tower in Edmonton when I was growing up. I was a bit upset when Epcor surplanted it. EPCOR is a crappy little tower that was never worthy of tallest building in the city.

However since Stantec's arrival, Manulife has practically disappeared from my visual idea of the city.

The buildings in focus are early True North Properties stucco slabs and the weird stucco and curtain wall KENNEDY twin point towers. it's a bit like basing Calgary architecture on a snap shot of the West End.

Calgary's weird too. 1 out of every 10 residential/mixed towers is a stand out while the other nine are blander than most infill elsewhere.

Some really great shots all around on this page.

Edmonton is fascinating for me, in some angles the skyline looks gigantic for a city of its size, but then other angles really highlight the sheer number of holes that exist in the urban fabric downtown. Does Edmonton have the highest proportion of surface parking lots in the downtown core for any major city in Canada?

Anecdotally I'd say yes. Calgary was as bad, but has made some serious headway on this.

I like Edmonton overall, but would be great to see more of those lord fill up!

This isn’t really a “skyline” shot, but a pic posted yesterday of a new tower rising in New Westminster. What struck me is the impressive urban feel at ground level.

New Westminster must be hands down the most urban feeling suburb in Canada:

Many key lots have been filled in the last 15yrs, but it will take another two full cycles or about 15yrs to really get many of those filled.

Thankfully the new Downtown park will move 1.4Ha of those and the two key parking lots at the UofA are both U/C.

It was really wild visiting my hometown of Calgary a couple of time last summer after many years absent. Downtown is DENSE now! When I was a kid it really was mostly towers in parking lots, with a few rows. It has a totally different feel now, very big city.

it's going to look denser in a few years with the Granville turnabouts being decommissioned into development sites and the big triangular site parallel to Vancouver House going into a tall tower
