I will preface this question by disclosing the fact that I know zilch about construction...Having said that, it seems to me that these footings for the Astra Tower are super shallow. I thought that they would have to dig a lot deeper into the ground for a building that tall. Is it possible that those footings/foundation is deeper than I realize? I am guessing they are about 12 feet down. Thanks for any insight!

Just got through watching this vid of drone footage from skylines around the country. Anyone who says some 550+ towers wouldn't look good in SLC is smoking crack. SLC skyline is so uniform! It's definitely improving, but some a nice 600 footer or two would do wonders

As much as I feel indifferent about the loss of this theatre, knowing how long it's been in bad shape and how much it would take to get it fixed up it is definitely hard to look at this image. Seeing all that ornamental work being torn out and the loss of its history is hard.

2nd Kimpton in SLC confirmed. "Grand opening 2023". We saw that rendering on the West Temple tower site showing the Kimpton brand. One of IGH's premium brands for sure and big news for our hotel scene: https://www.ihg.com/kimptonhotels/content/us/en/stay/boutique-hotels-in-salt-lake-city

I've gotten feedback from multiple sources that that tower set is going to break ground soon.

Hooray no more weeds and grass at that corner. This lot has had so many teasers for so long it seems we finally are about to get it developed!

That’s 3 high rises recently completed or very near and another 3 high rises that have broke ground or just about too break ground. This is a decade for change for both the skyline and population growth in the downtown area. Of the 6 new buildings they consist of 1 office building, 1 hotel, and 4 residential, not including the Kimpton hotel. Looking forward to the 2nd
full phase of west quarter and both high rises next to the DA building

I lived 31 years in the Wasatch Front and never once knew this theater existed. Who managed this place into the ground?

At minimum, I still would have loved to see a scale replica of this re-built in the base of the new tower, using as many artifacts as possible. Can you imagine how much urban "cred" SLC would have with a legit "PANTAGES" theater, even a replica?

But whatever— another of SLC's one dozen historic places gone.

I worry they are butchering the old murals (which we know will be gone) and worry it's going to end up looking as state as Jordan River on the inside when they are done. The lack of ANY interior photos or videos during the project is a huge huge huge alarm bell.

Agreed, it's a tough loss to take for a city that has plenty of surface parking lots that could have easily been utilized this tower. I know it would cost a lot to fix it but would much rather see another park lot bite the dust then this historic theater.

What you are seeing is a mat footing that the piers tie into

Picked this up on Twitter. HUGE changes coming to downtown zones. Text, maps the whole 9 yards. I love a lot of the text changes but I'm just digging in. Lots of mid block height and tighter street-front language.

Did anyone else notice that Google Maps has updated the 3D skyline for Salt Lake City

It now has 95 S State, Liberty Sky, Hyatt Regency, etc.

It looks like it was done sometime around January/February-ish
