Cloudy, with the sun starting to break through, and a cold 3 degrees at 10:30am. Mix of sun and cloud this afternoon with a high of only 5 expected, though I'd say if the sun cracks through those clouds a bit earlier then it'll probably warm up a bit more than that.

Back to seasonal tomorrow, with above average temperatures still expected starting Tuesday.

Beautiful typical spring day in Halifax. The sun is warm and strong, but you are quickly chilled when you step out of any shelter from the wind. Beautiful day, but not 'shorts weather' yet.

On the vegetation side of things, deciduous trees are budding out with the start of leaves just becoming visible. Daylilies have pushed up out of the ground, the hosta sprouts are peeking out, the grass is starting to green up, and the early weeds are out in force, with some small yellow flowers appearing already in the sunny spots. Spring has sprung!

It was -4C this morning and we still have some snow on the ground leftover from Winter in Timmins but it will soon be gone with what I see in the forecast as Summer-like temperature will soon arrive with lots of sunshine.

Predicted highs 15C, 19C, 26C, 28C, 28C, 24C, 27C

I am going to have to install the air conditioner in my home office! Timmins may be the hotspot for Canada on one or two days next week. Actually, there is a forecasted high of 30C up in Moosonee on Tuesday!

A question to you and also to the other forumists. Normally, in the spring in your cities, what time of year do the first leaves start to appear in deciduous trees and when does grass start to grow?

Depends on species of course. The maple trees here in Moncton are in full flower right now, but leafing out won't really occur until the very end of May. The grass is already growing.

In Hamilton things are coming out right now. First green on trees usually starts the last week of April or the first week of May. This year it was the first week of May. My Crimson King Maple started showing green on Monday or Tuesday. I’ve already cut my grass twice, which starts a bit earlier, more so mid to late April. It’s about the same in Toronto, and is usually a few days ahead of Hamilton, and the rest of the GTA is varyingly behind that. Generally the closer to the lake the earlier the bloom.

Up in cottage country today, and it’s 19 and sunny and beautiful. First leaf up here is usually the second or third week of May, so nothing yet.

For St. John's, grass will be green by late April, a bit earlier for more well cared for grass like in parks.

When trees leaf out is very dependent on tree variety, though St. John's is notoriously late for leafing out due to the sluggish and cool spring. About 50% of the cities trees are some variety of maple, of which they're just budding now, with leafing out likely happening by late May or early June. Aspen and Poplar bud later but leaf out earlier, likely around late May too. Oaks, elms, and beech are a bit slower.

Magnolias may be the true first tree to "leaf out", but most of them are kept to private properties.

Trees started leafing out here about a week ago. Some trees have about 25% progress (maples, etc.) with tiny leaves on them. I would say we are about a week late this year due to the cold spring. Most of my neighbours cut their lawn at least once.

Thanks for the replies and I hope that other forumists will reply as well. It would be interesting to find a map of Canada indicating the birth and death periods of the leaves and grass.

I'm in Ottawa as well and haven't cut it yet and I haven't noticed other lawns cut yet. Maybe in 3 or 4 days. I probably cut the lawn more from mid May until mid to late June than the rest of the time combined. Probably the last time is late September?

I haven’t cut mine either, but most of my neighbours across the street did. Their lawns do get more direct sunlight then mine though, so I guess that plays into it. At the rate it is growing, I will probably cut it next weekend. I usually cut it last in mid-October. If the fall is particularly nice like the last couple, the last time can be in early November.

What? Grass doesn’t stay green all year?

It doesn't stay green in Van City all year either. Isn't your grass brown most of the summer?

I am semi-obsessed by anything map-related, but unfortunately I don’t think what you are looking for exists. It sure would be interesting to see this on a map though. If you don’t have it yet, I suggest you get the Windy app. There’s tons of different layers, from fog to soil moisture and sea temperature. And it’s worldwide too.

14C and sunny. Should be the last below average in a while. We deserve it.

Low of 3C this morning. Still very cold mornings.

The warmspot was Gillam, MB at 23.4C.

Some juicy highs are starting to appear. Let's see how warm it gets.

Our trees leaf out so late that we have quite a few flowering ones associated with spring elsewhere that bloom in summer here, in my memory at least

Grass is more reasonable. I’ve mowed twice already. It didn’t even turn brown until a snowless cold snap well into winter. Typically the untended wild grass areas stay brown for ages, but anywhere it’s mowed is usually green in April.
