My flattened version is more accurate. Everything is off in the original image, including the cab of the truck, the height of the doors on the boathouses, the proportions of the windows on the buildings, the No Trespassing sign. You can look on Google 3D view and see how stretched everything is. Maybe the original image is off because of a side effect of telephoto compression and it's not edited, but it definitely looks stretched regardless.

I would give Metrotown in Burnaby the most impressive suburban high rise cluster. New suburban skylines in Canada are blossoming. Who knows 25 years from now.

I forgot about cities like Saskatoon and Regina. I still think places like that and Halifax and Victoria would be in the second tier, top 15 skylines in Canada though.

Victoria's may not be as tall as the other three but it has the best landscape for city. Places like Regina have a skyline that you can see half way to Moose Jaw on the #1highway, so Prairie skylines like Winnipeg etc have that advantage though.

This is really off-topic but Molson's post reminded me of one of the most legendary stories from the internet that everyone should read once. I believe it originally comes from a reddit post titled "What is the laziest thing you've ever witnessed?"

Late to the party but this one is too good to pass up:

I was once on a US military ship, having breakfast in the wardroom (officers lounge) when the Operations Officer (OPS) walks in. This guy was the definition of NOT a morning person; he's still half asleep, bleary eyed... basically a zombie with a bagel. He sits down across from me to eat his bagel and is just barely conscious. My back is to the outboard side of the ship, and the morning sun is blazing in one of the portholes putting a big bright-🞵🞵🞵 circle of light right on his barely conscious face. He's squinting and chewing and basically just remembering how to be alive for today. It's painful to watch.

But then zombie-OPS stops chewing, slowly picks up the phone, and dials the bridge. In his well-known I'm-still-totally-asleep voice, he says "heeeey. It's OPS. Could you... shift our barpat... yeah, one six five. Thanks." And puts the phone down. And then he just sits there. Squinting. Waiting.

And then, ever so slowly, I realize that that big blazing spot of sun has begun to slide off the zombie's face and onto the wall behind him. After a moment it clears his face and he blinks slowly a few times and the brilliant beauty of what I've just witnessed begins to overwhelm me. By ordering the bridge to adjust the ship's back-and-forth patrol by about 15 degrees, he's changed our course just enough to reposition the sun off of his face. He's literally just redirected thousands of tons of steel and hundreds of people so that he could get the sun out of his eyes while he eats his bagel. I am in awe.

He slowly picks up his bagel and for a moment I'm terrified at the thought that his own genius may escape him, that he may never appreciate the epic brilliance of his laziness (since he's not going to wake up for another hour). But between his next bites he pauses, looks at me, and gives me the faintest, sly grin, before returning to gnaw slowly on his zombie bagel.

Here's my shot of Metrotown taken from downtown a couple of days ago with my phone (no telephoto lens or stretching). Compare and contrast to the original and your flattened version.





Notice the proportions of the tallest tower in my pic align with the original shot and not your edited version.

Another easy way of determining if the picture is skewed or stretched is to view pictures of this ship online. You'll see that the "O" in the ship's name is consistently oval and not circle shaped - thus the original picture is accurate.

And we can also rely on the person who lives in Vancouver and actually took the picture/video.

But to be fair, when viewed all the way from Halifax I can understand why there might be a perception of distortion

I fully accept your evidence and will close the case on my end, but with the caveat that the telephoto compression DOES make everything look bizarrely distorted to my eye.

The topography and consistent building height mean you don't get the punches, but it is 100% one of the most urban and highrise focused of any suburb in Canadam even more than Metrotown, but obviously with a very different feel. So I guess it comes down to the 'skyline' impression. I wish someone would figure out the best angles of Richmond to really capture just how many highrises there are.

Don't disagree with this. Of all the suburban city centres, Richmond is easily the best put together, and feels more mature than other centres. I guess comes down to what you define as really "urban", but certainly Richmond is far more hospitable for pedestrians than Metrotown. Not sure what the numbers are but Richmond CC has to be right up there with Metrotown as far as population and density go.
