do we have any idea what Grocery Store is going into Burrard Place yet?

is it still going to be Mienhardt? after the beating they took on the Ambleside location ..... I am not so sure? Mienhardt is overpriced but has some good stuff on the higher end of the grocery spectrum IMO. I don't see a location there doing well. if they failed in West Van ... I don't see it at Hornby and Drake.

Having a Meinhardt there would be a great idea! The new office workers and residents can utilize its deli for lunch and it would help a lot if they have a nice patio with tables and umbrellas for the sunny days, while the many residents in the neighbourhood can keep the market well-patronized. To be honest, folks love swanky hang-out venues in new developments.

The problem for the Ambleside location is that the shopping street is simply dead, especially in the evening. A lack of newer developments around there is also not helping to support population growth in the immediate neighbourhood. For the Northshore, Meinhardt would've been better off to be located at Park Royal Mall or Lonsdale Quay or the Shipyards area.

With Fresh Street 2 blocks away they will be in tough. as for a hang out spot there is Maxines across Burrard. Also I doubt the Meinhardt will be a cafe set up with lots of seats. The Downtown loctation is a grab and go spot for example with just a few seats.

It's only a 4300 square feet CRU for the "grocery". It would be a similar size to the downtown and Ambleside location. Even then it's doubtful there are enough office workers that would sustain the business compared to a downtown location. And most residents will still need to do their major shopping at a real grocery store.

Gotta love Burnaby Now's conniption fit articles...

Quote:
Two of Burnaby’s biggest grocery stores have eliminated having plastic bags for grocery items and some customers are upset at the change and how it was handled.

The Walmart stores at Metropolis at Metrotown and Lougheed Town Centre no longer offer plastic bags and the change was finalized on Friday, April 22, which was Earth Day.

Some Burnaby customers said they hadn’t seen any warnings about the change and were stuck at the checkout areas with no way to carry their groceries.

...
We talked about this on here a month ago, and I've noticed signs up at the Metrotown location. What more do people want - a parade with clowns and balloons announcing there will be no more plastic grocery bags?

I was at walmart today, I had my bag at the self-checkout and some guy at one nearby asked for a bag. lol.

All Surrey stores eliminated bags last year so I am pretty used to having one with me even keep some stashed in my pocket.

I'm a lapsed cyclist so I'm used to loading up a backpack and also using a cloth bag when I do a lot of shopping. I've barely collected plastic bags for decades.

FYI CleanBC Plastics Action Plan

Quote:
The Province is proposing a new regulation to reduce single-use and plastic waste by limiting or banning the use of certain single-use items. Feedback from this engagement will help create this regulation.

The regulation will complement and expand on the actions taken by B.C. municipalities and the federal government to tackle plastic waste and pollution. The proposed regulation will cover checkout bags, disposable foodservice accessories, problematic plastic foodservice ware packaging (polystyrene, PVC, and compostable plastics) and oxo-degradable plastics.

Likewise, anyone who drives has a box full of reusable bags in the trunk of the car. It just becomes habit.

We shop at Choices, which has always offered paper bags (with handles) as well as plastic bags (which they've faded out for months now), so it's not a problem here.

But, 2 blocks from the Choices at the Shoppers Drug Mart, they only offered plastic bags. Fine. Now they only offer plastic-derived reusable bags...is this a better solution? Because they are just transferring the problem into a cash-generating product. I rarely see anybody bring their own bags into that shop.

Then a few blocks down the road from that, at Home Depot (8th/Cambie), they got rid of their plasic bags (yay), but now only offer paper bags...with no handles(!) So you can't really walk very far with those. I guess they assume you're just going to walk to your car with the bag of goods.

This is really simple, everybody. I wish everywhere would just offer paper bags with handles.

Paper bags with handles don't work for heavy items. No handles means you have to support the bottom.
ie I don't think the liquor stores' paper bags have handles.

Fashion comeback: Le Château returns to brick-and-mortar stores across Canada

Quote:
Montreal-based fashion brand Le Château is making a comeback.

The iconic Canadian fashion brand will relaunch brick-and-mortar stores across the country while ushering in a new clothing line in 37 new concept Suzy Shier locations throughout Canada.

On April 21, Le Château reopened retail outposts within Suzy Shier locations in Quebec, Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Saskatchewan.

In October 2020, Le Château closed all of its 123 Canadian locations due to “severely impacted” sales resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic.

One thing I wonder about this - what will people used for small garbage can liners now? I've always used old plastic bags. Does this mean people will go out and buy new plastic liners just to throw away trash?

You can buy eco-friendly garbage bags...
(yeah I end up with plastic bags from family and reuse them as garbage bags too)

Coach in Pacific Centre is moving to part of the former Massimo Dutti space. No signage up for the rest of the spaces down there.

Unviable business climate prompts Vancity Sports to leave Vancouver
https://biv.com/article/2022/05/unviable-business-climate-prompts-vancity-sports-leave-vancouver

The article suggests that the scaffolding on the HBC is to test the facade.
