Your comment is analogous to this: starting to patch a cracked basement foundation, it starts raining partway through the project and then water gets into your basement, and saying there was no point in starting the project.

The province has been slowly building it up since the 97 Flood. This isn't done overnight lol.

Our lovely PC government actually took the cheap way out as usual a few years ago, and opted for a roundabout route instead of raising a section near Morris, which you're griping about right now. So vote them out next election if you want to do anything about this.

Not sure if this was completed or is still the plan.

https://www.gov.mb.ca/mit/pth75/index.html

But they plan on using PR 246 as a detour instead of doing significant raising north of Morris. Including the birdge.

Edit: Ah I see Wildcake shared a news article explaining it. Yes they took the cheap route. Cons cheeped out on proper solutions so they could give you phony tax breaks and phony hospital consolidations benefits. Now that section of hwy is screwed for flooding since the repaved it for $40 million.. Smooth hwy though.

They should do it right and build a bypass around the west side of town which will minimize the awkward jogs and intersections, and will accommodate future growth in the town. It shouldn't be that hard, it would in all likelihood be less than 10 km with only one bridge over the Morris River, and if you want to get extra fancy a railway overpass. Not exactly some epic undertaking.

interesting slide show from 2011. Overall tones, everything is costly lol

Going west would be about 5.5 miles and still has jogs and such. Either way, sounds like it's not happening anytime soon.

It makes you wonder how on earth they ever managed to get the Portage Bypass built in the 60s...

Nearly perfect. Missed it by that much. In the 60's. Today it would be fully at grade.

Portage By-pass, Portage Diversion, Shellmouth Dam, and Duffs Ditch. Much more visionary back then?

Also interesting to see their explanation for what level of flood to protect against. Long story short is that anything worse than 2009 levels (approx. what we're about to get with this year's flood) would close I29 and the Emerson border crossing so there's no point in spending extra millions to make it better than that. Just accept the detour at that point. Crazy to think they closed I29 to small vehicles but still let trucks drive through a highway covered in flood water in 2009.

Some thoughts:

1. Oh, that music. Just fantastic.
2. Designed using computers. Computers! The future.
3. In terms of dollars spent to dollars saved from damage? Probably one of the best values spent in Canada ever.
4. Manitoba used to have a lot of large scale, but very practical vision. The flood control project and the massive hydro projects of the north come to mind. Forward thinking visions that will continue to pay off decades into the future. Not too shabby for a province of a million people.
5. It is a shame healthcare is such a money — today. Healthcare is great and all, but damn, doesn’t it just eat money like a black hole. One wonders how much better infrastructure could be without healthcare gobbling it all up.

Wow, at 14:22 you can see how they diverted the Red River around the control structure as it was being built.

Very true.
Let’s just see what can be done with what little money there is, be it Manitoba, Northwestern Ontario, or Northeastern Ontario.

I just passed through deacons corner. All signage and workers are present on #1 here. With all this new investment in road construction why isn’t the province switching to an interchange here. A simple diamond will suffice.

Because the Province refuses to get money from Trudeau out of spite.

Yeah it’s too bad we can’t figure that part out. That said, I’m sure it would come with some strings attached so I can sort of understand the rationale politically speaking

Need to match contributions or something like that. Pretty standard stuff. St. Mary's for example is being funding solely by the Province from my understanding.

So you are saying that having to cross the main line TWICE is going to improve 75? Trains slow down when they roll into Morris. So the train crossings X 2 would be even worse for traffic. We both know they would NOT build to overpasses for the rail line. So it would be at grade crossings. Something we do not need.

It's a secondary main. The real mainlines run east-west through Winnipeg. That's why I like the east side better. They'd have to make an awkward crossing of the track right next to 75 though. They actually just straightened out the highway south of Morris, moving it closer to the track.

I wonder how the birdge construction site is doing at 59N over floodway. I assume they had pre defined timelines for construction during spring. Ie: No major works during flood season.
