What's the purpose of commissioning such a large underwater mural only to have it torn up in a few months time?

The mural was part of the promo of this new tower. They were tied in.

Finally. Despite the letdown on this one, it will still add to the area. Good materials may make it nice and not a spandrel monstrosity. We shall see.

They're blasting mats, but they can also be used in demolition to control debris when concrete is being jackhammered close to other structures. Unless anyone has seen any indication of blasting, that's the more likely use here.

I've seen it used by the equipment as a "staging ground" were the caterpillar jackhammers enter / exit from.

That probably makes the most sense since they are just jack hammering and ripping the concrete probably.

^That's too bad, the original rezoning suggested retention but allowed for removal based on demo/construction plans.

The trees were not in great condition (related to the infrastructure) and retention would have been a mess once they redid the sidewalks and roads. Best to do it right and start fresh.
