59 from the border to St Malo is being upgraded right now. Paved shoulders are being added. Also PR 246 on the east side of the Red River was recently paved from being gravel as an alternate to 75 between Morris and Aubigny.

59 is only quicker to access NE or Northern Minnesota. Virtually anything else south of that, including Minneapolis, is quicker via 75/I29. Going Steinbach to Minneapolis is even quicker via 75.

It would cost substantially more to twin all of 59, upgrade the highway to modern trucking standards (aka Manitoba bare minimum standards) and upgrade the Tolstoi border crossing, than to upgrade 75 near morris, including a flood proof bypass.

All for what? Having to use a slightly inconvenient detour for a month every 5-8 years? Sure it's annoying and costs shipping companies a bit more of fuel but it's not gonna skyrocket consumer prices or collapse the economy.

59 is being upgraded from PTH 52 to the border to RTAC standards. Maybe that's part of the work going on now that was mentioned. That will be a significant upgrade, along with the twinning.

IMO the Morris bypass should go on the east side of the dike between the river. Build embankment as much as you can then build a viaduct type structure over the river itself. Probably cheaper to do that they go the longer route around the west side of the dike.

I was thinking something like this. More direct than going around the west side. Kind of awkward at the PTH 23 bridge location. Could even re-align the red if they wanted to avoid the long viaduct type bridge crossing I mentioned before.

None of the options will be cheap for the bypass. Length of this option is 4 miles.

The option you sketched up would probably work too. Maybe would be based on highway geometry and such and see what's best.

Is Ladco closing there Borland road construction division out?

I saw a sign outside of their shop on HWY 59 saying there was going to be an equipment auction May 11/12 and looking at the Ritchie Brothers Auction website it appears that over 1600 items from Borland are being auctioned off.

That is going to be a bit of blow to both the city road and highway construction projects if a lot of the equipment moves out of Manitoba. That will be one less Manitoba based company bidding on jobs here.

It had been mentioned Borland was for sale. It's already a pretty tight group in the road industry...

I think that someone (plrh) had mentioned it a few months ago but I was thinking it was going as a complete company being as large of a player in the civil construction and snow clearing tenders as it was.

It was a surprise to see the auction signs there.

I wonder who will do the civil site work for all the remaining Ladco projects now that they have sold there heavy construction division?

It looks like it didn't all sell as one. I'm sure every single one of their employees has found other work. They will probably auction the equipment, transfer the land to Ladco and maybe sell the gravel pits. There isn't much else to a civil construction company. Name recognition is almost worthless because most jobs are government, where lowest bid wins regardless of past experience.

All of Ladco's development's are being tendered. Much of their work was done outside of house before anyway. Borland was never given an advantage when pricing Ladco work.

The supposed "trucking capital" of Canada once again has its major Can/US truck route closed yet again!

Does anyone learn here in Manitoba? When will a govt. come up with a permanent solution to keep the vital link open? A bypass around Morris should have happened 40 years ago!

They've raised large sections of the highway in recent years. Morris always the weak link.

That looks like a line right through a lagoon or wastewater facility.

Looks like an old one maybe. I don't know. There's a bigger one north of town. Could either go around it or remove it.

There's a water co-op facility right next to it. Maybe a reservoir?

The east one is a water reservoir, the west one (north of town) is a sewage lagoon.

That would never get approved for the simple reason that it has two bridge crossings over the Red. They'd almost certainly just bypass Morris on the West not just because it would be cheaper but because there are fewer properties to deal with.

So doesn't there still being a weak link negate all the benefit's of raising it!?

Indeed. Unless theres some sort of grade/property issues, bypassing to the west seems logical, no?

It would be much cheaper than constructing two sets of bridges.

Would it be cheaper though? Longer route. Still lots of properties. 2 smaller river crossings. An additional 3 rail crossings.

Like I said, they could probably just dig a channel and move the Red over, never having to actually cross it. I like the east route better as it's straighter, but it had challenges. The golf course. PTH 23. The reservoirs.

Not really. The highway used to be underwater from huge stretches. Now it's not that way and is still useable.

Gotta chip away at it. Typically the hardest issues are dealt with last.
