Voting out a mayor won't change anything. The change can only be initiated at the provincial level, where the "law and order" crowd never shows up.
I might have to check the Constitution again but I'm pretty sure the Criminal Code is Federal.

OT but the lanes along Smithe St after the bike lane was put in are so stupidly narrow they must be violating some Transport Canada safety standards.

Doesn't help that everyone's gone full Soccer Mom driving around fullsize SUVs to go to yoga class and to get coffee. One slight lane misjudgment and it's sideswipe city.

I was referring to the Mayor's statements a few months ago about how there's no problem, the city is safe, one of the safest in the world...

Yes, there's a thread to talk about roads and also a biking and sidewalk thread. And the three lanes on Smithe that are for vehicles are the same width that they were before the bike lane was constructed.

The mayor's statement doesn't affect what a mayor can and cannot do. Expecting a mayor to push criminal justice reform is completely ignorant of how Canadian government functions. The law and order crowd are actively contributing to their own perpetual disappoint.

Well, we'll see what the Vancouver public thinks about the "not my jurisdiction" stance in the Vancouver civic election coming up in five short months. Disorder in the city over the last four years is bound to come up as an election issue.

Tell that to the Clown Council instead. It is them that are trying to legalize hard drugs and push other idiotic agenda completely outside of their jurisdiction, yet they still do it. Swanson et al. should focus on repaving roads and adding trash cans, and forget about their criminal utopia.

I think they did a good job with the park at Richards and Smithe. I am glad it isn't just a patch of grass and flowers, this is more interesting AND it is a really cool playground for kids, way different that the standard kind. I was there on Saturday and saw the crows of families, never seen anything like it downtown. I was impressed by the variety and more 'grown up' playground, it wasn't just monkey bars and a swing set. Another thing I liked was the major elevation changes in the park, the slopes and height changes were integrated into the playground offerings, which i think was smart. Ie. not just single flat surface, it was more like an adventure playground.

Of course I agree with everyone else, upkeep and proper maintenance so it doesn't turn into a drug infested toilet is crucial, but in terms of what they built, I think it fits well for the area. A grassy patch with a fountain is not needed, this is way better for kids

I also checked out the new park on the weekend and it was a wonderful scene! So many people, happy kids and chatting parents.

With this and the Richards St project now complete, Richards functions as a beautiful park connector, from this new park at Smithe, past Emery Barnes Park, out to George Wainborn Park.

having a coffee shop on site should help with having "eyes" on the park during the day time at least, it looks nice and nice how they integrated the older mature trees.

They should stick the art gallery on the downtown VCC site and incorporate a new campus into Larwill

An elected official, especially the mayor, has the responsibility to push for changes that can benefit a city rather than only claiming everything is all good and dandy. He is paid by tax payers to do a job well.
