Nice video, thanks for posting.
So just the West portion of the Calgary Ring Road required to complete the “Ring” now. Total completion in 2024!

I’ve been wondering: where bridges are built in the project, why aren’t rock fills used instead?

My guesses would be:

1. Sheer volume of rock required. AFAIK, they’re not doing a lot of rock removal, so balancing cut and fill means that they would have to bring in fill.

2. Environmental issues with the lakes/rivers. Dumping a pile of fill may result in fill ending up in the water (due to slopes required) which is no bueno, especially in a national park.

Again, these are guesses.

Mountainsides are too steep to hold the rock?

The CP Main line is at the bottom of the canyon as well as the Kicking Horse River. I don't think CP would appreciate an accidental rockslide from the construction above.

The work to widen the A-50, which will be carried out in seven work packages, will continue until 2032. These different packages will be added to the first section, for which work has been underway since January. Ultimately, the project will provide the region with a four-lane highway with divided carriageways over the 96 kilometers that are currently contiguous. The project will be carried out in work packages, the design of which will be carried out in parallel, but for which the work will be carried out successively.

The extension of Autoroute 20 restarts

Quote:
A few months before the start of the provincial elections, Premier François Legault has kept his promise: the extension of Highway 20 between Notre-Dame-des-Neiges and Le Bic is now re-registered in the Quebec Infrastructure Plan (PQI).

A Youtube creator I follow made a vid about the new Gordie Howe Bridge.

When done it will connect Highway 401 in Windsor with I-75 in Detroit.

I admit I'm excited to drive across it in 2024 when it's complete. I feel like it's overall a very under-the-radar project considering it's size for North America, there really aren't a lot of bridges this size built on this continent. The only other similar size bridges I can recall getting built in the last 10-15 years is the Zappan-Tee, Champlain, Port Mann, and Bay Bridges, and none of those have a main span anywhere close to the length of the Gordie Howe.

Yah it is an under the radar project. I only know about it because I saw the working drawings before it was started. A coworker at the time was looking at building conflicts and he asked me to look at some of the mechanical issues. Some pretty need spaces in the customs centres at each end. and huge centres as well.

I follow the Facebook page for the bridge and it's very interesting watching the progress. We don't drive down that way very often, but that bridge will definitely be our go to instead of Sarnia. I much prefer driving in Ontario, and avoiding the cluster of a good chunk of Detroit will be a godsend.

Do you usually head down I-75? I’ve learned it after the fact that I shouldn’t have needed to pass through Detroit on my way to Chicago, for example.

When I look at the 'missing links' in the North American transportation system, the Gordie Howe Bridge seemed to be one of the most obvious ones. Forcing all the transport traffic through the city of Windsor seemed foolish given the volume of it.

The residents of Windsor will be happier, truckers will be happier, and much of the cost will be loaded onto the users of the bridge. No downsides to it, as far as I can see.

I am curious what other obvious links people think are missing. Quebec Autoroute 35 and 85 completion, maybe? A better link between Ottawa and Gatineau for trucks?

A bypass of the Nipigon River Bridge. There is literally no alternative route through Canada.
