no, we don't have to bring in everyone that works in a hospital. IMO, it depends on how you view food service and cleaners in the role of a mission of a hospital. How often would you need security guards vs cleaners in ER, versus chemotherapy versus dialysis. IMO cthe pandemic has shown how important cleaners are especially

I realize that public sector workers are not infallible and I hope that the HEU will realize this and be rapid to feedback. BUt I am unsure of how privatizing this will improve this, aside from saving money by cutting staffing and wages to workers, while ensuring contracting companies get a profit.

That's why I think this is more of a "feel good" story for supporting unionized workers and the NDP base than any change in hospitals.

I mean look at food quality. If they promised food would be even a fraction better than when the current private companies then I think most people would support the change. But even after it's brought into the public sector I think most people would have a difficult time eating anything on a hospital food tray.

When would the latest date be that a provincial election could be held?

On or before October 19, 2024. There's no obvious reason to think that it will be any earlier. The NDP majority is solid, and they've not done anything particularly unpopular yet, or fallen out with each other.

The BC Liberals needed fresh blood and new ideas. Not another retread.

I've voted for both sides of the political spectrum in the past. Falcon has a lot of baggage, but i'd wait to hear his ideas. Having good poltical parties on all sides is in everyone's interest

Wilkinson was unlikeable as leader and was blatantly out of touch with a lot of people ("renting is a wacky time in people's lives"), but one thing i am grateful for and have my undying respect is that he did not politicize the pandemic response and IMO allowed BC to do relatively well under Covid.

The BC Libs so far don't seem batshit crazy like other right-leaning parties in canada, but jesus, that's a low bar and i'm unsure how long that will last

Falcon's a better speaker than Horgan and likely will be better on rallying the troops than Wilkinson. But on the other hand he and the BC Libs have a lot of negative history on healthcare that can be brought out in a campaign at the end of a pandemic.

Premier Horgan calls byelection for Vancouver-Quilchena
The byelection is to fill the seat left vacant by former B.C. Liberal leader Andrew Wilkinson.

Author of the article:The Canadian Press
Publishing date:Apr 02, 2022 • 21 hours ago • 1 minute read •

The Liberals have nominated their new leader, Kevin Falcon, who is a former provincial cabinet minister, to run in Vancouver-Quilchena.

Falcon said in a statement Saturday that he will “advocate for common-sense policies,” including reducing taxes and providing support to the most vulnerable residents.

The NDP say Jeanette Ashe, an academic, will be their candidate.

Ashe said in a statement that she promises, among other things, to reduce car insurance by $500 a year, decrease child care fees and take on real estate speculators.

The B.C. Green party announced on Thursday that emergency management expert Wendy Hayko would be their candidate in the byelection.

Cutting taxes! What a revolutionary way to deal with our underfunded healthcare system!

I'm genuinely curious if there are any non-disclosure, confidentiality, and conflict-of-interest protections in a scenario where a municipal politician and a provincial politician live under the same roof.

I ask since the provincial NDP candidate is married to the mayor.

And is a board member for Atira.

I can't see Dr. Ashe doing to well in a very wealthy/waspy area that is probably not too please with her husbands governing of the city. Would assume Falcon is a shoe-in.

Seems setup perfectly to just be a referendum on the mayor versus any provincial issues that either candidate wants to talk about.

Interesting....

In other news Adrienne Carr now says she won't run for mayor for the Greens, virtually assuring Stewart will get in again.

Elected members of Council take an oath, on taking their seat, to observe confidentiality on any item identified as confidential and dealt with in an 'in camera' meeting. I assume members of the BC Legislature take a similar oath.

It's theoretical at this point as there would have to be something terrible and currently unknown in Falcon's record for him to lose this election, as the Liberals have held it since 1991. It's more likely to be a way of raising Dr. Ashe's profile for the upcoming municipal election.

If she did win, it would be no different from when Derek Corrigan was Mayor of Burnaby and his wife was an MLA.

Not a scientific poll but if lawn signs are any indication, Kennedy Stewart's wife is going to get her 🞵🞵🞵 handed to her in Vancouver-Quilchena.

Quilchena is a 'BC Liberal' riding. Nobody expects the NDP to win there, (or the Conservative, even if she was born there). The seat is the property developer's unless some serious dishonesty emerges in the next 9 days.

You say "property developer" as if it is a bad thing. That certainly seems at odd with your tone in other posts.

No, I said 'property developer' because that was his last job. You were the one who applied a value judgement. Given many of your past comments, I wouldn't think you'd be too happy with a property developer as an MLA. But that's me applying a value judgement (based on experience).
