If so - I thought I read a rumour on here that Porter was maybe considering that area for a hangar for their new jet planes.

If that's true, that would make me incredibly excited, because it would be another hint that Porter might make YOW an actual hub due to their high commitment to the airport.

The information I received in conversation with a Porter maintenance tech based at YOW was that a Porter facility was envisioned in exactly that area and that airfield changes would be needed to make it possible (e.g. taxiway addition/expansion). Seems to line up with this latest news. We’ll see.

Having said that I’ve also been hearing about a new reception centre being built for as long as I can remember. We’ll see.

Question: does anyone know if the airport authority does as it pleases with regards to airside development, or do they go through city devapps?

There are plans for a proposed hangar development immediately to the west of the new CRC with no names attached. Seems to be the best/worst kept secret at the airport.

Hopefully it is what everyone seems to think. I am bullish on potential success a Porter operation could accomplish in offering an alternative to the chaos of the status quo hubs here in eastern Canada. This is a pretty flexible “big” airport that can accommodate rapid expansion/traffic growth. Fast connections can be made to the US to major airports that fit their model.

Do you think they could carve out a niche market for people willing to pay a bit more for a premium service out of here from say the maritimes/northern Ontario/east Toronto and offer a true alternative to the norm?

Might be good timing to be aggressive when the big boys are licking their wounds post COVID.

Can anyone pinpoint on that map exactly where the new CRC will go?

Edit: I’m assuming it’ll be a new build but maybe not. Perhaps it’ll be a reno of the existing hangar there (just above and left of deicing pad (12)?

Roughly the back of the CRC would be where the Caution wind tunnel starts. The proposed hangar dev is to the west of that. All built north of The existing hangar 14. Two fingers off of Romeo to access both ramps.

Swoop starts YEG-YOW (originating in YXX) tomorrow with their flight scheduled to land in Ottawa at 16:42 Monday.

YOW-YEG (and continuing to YXX) departs at 17:15. A quick turn!

That is quick. Way back when at YOW, I used to turn 732s & 735s in 25-30 minutes, so 33 minutes for a much larger 738 is tight!

Today's departure count: 50, including the aforementioned swoop inaugural.

'Ultra-low-cost' carrier Swoop marks first flight between Edmonton and Ottawa

Megan Gillis, Ottawa Citizen
Apr 26, 2022 • 1 hour ago • 1 minute read

Swoop — billed as an “ultra-low-cost airline” — marked its inaugural flight between Edmonton and the Ottawa International Airport Monday.

The YEG to YOW run is the first of new summer routes, the airline said.

Calgary-based Swoop is advertising Ottawa to Edmonton service five times a week. Starting in June, there will be flights daily to Halifax and four times weekly to Winnipeg. One-way flights start at $59, the airline said.

Air travel demand “is reaching unprecedented heights,” head of commercial and finance Bert van der Stege said, pointing to new routes allowing people to reconnect with distant friends and family and boosting tourism.

Michael Crockatt, president and CEO of Ottawa Tourism, welcomed Swoop’s direct service from Edmonton, saying the capital looks forward to welcoming visitors from western Canada and beyond.

Service to Ottawa is important for business people, said Myron Keehn, vice-president of air service and business development at the Edmonton International Airport. He said tourist opportunities go both ways with visitors heading to his region and Jasper.

Swoop, an independent subsidiary of the WestJet Group of Companies, said its fleet of ten Boeing 737-800 NG aircraft will expand to 16 planes with the addition of six Boeing MAX-8 this year.

I'm surprised there's no reference to the same-plane service to/from YXX.

It's too bad there's no Signature Service out of YOW this summer - it was a nice treat last year having the 787-8 on the YVR-YOW route. Although I'm sure AC is getting more revenue out of the 787 by putting it on a European route. Fares to Europe seem to be quite high so they are clearly seeing significant demand over the next few months

Funny, I was curious when it was announced that YOW-YVR had a 788 last summer so I went back and turns out it was a year ago today.

Yeah that flight was a treat!!

No doubt AC is making more money by sending them to Europe or on cargo heavy domestic routes. Hopefully we will see the 788 back next summer to LHR and/or FRA! The 787 is such a nice aircraft.

It certainly is.. BUT.. my last flight on one was CDG-SFO on United. I had a window and it was a rare, BEAUTIFUL clear day over the north Atlantic. I was so excited about flying over Iceland, Greenland and the Canadian Arctic... I can be entertained for hours simply staring out the window.

Well - as you know, windows are electronically dimmable. The Flight Attendants decided to OVERRIDE the individual settings and keep the plane totally dark for the entire flight!!! I asked them to release mine.. but no go.

He said the VFFs like it that way.. the cynical me says it's just the FAs like to keep everyone asleep and pacified to minimize their workload.

787... never again.
