Speaking of growth, I’ve never seen so many UHaul trucks in this city. Depots are overflowing with some renting land to store vehicles. I see no less than 6 cars with Ontario plates on my 10 minute commute and traffic is heavier at off peak times. StatCan labour report indicates growth of 200 per month which is pretty decent. The Wentworth has 2 apartments remaining. All points to strong growth.

Because ppl who use uhaul are usually low income ppl. That is why they are coming to this dump.Most people from Southern Ontario would not move to Saint John and if they did they would use a moving company.

Geez. Tell us how you really feel. I don't know if you have priced moving companies lately but they are not cheap and at times ruin peoples belongings, so people move their own things. it's got nothing to do with wealth or lack there of. If you live in Saint John get out and have a look around.... its actually pretty good .

It would be cool to see someone build just south of Red Rose Tea (City owned lot IIRC between RRT and Union). Prominent location, would add a lot to the skyline, and would properly 'gate' the main entrance to the uptown for eastbound travel. Not that anyone here is partial to the concept, but you could easily connect it to the pedway system under Main. Something Mercantile Centre scale wouldn't dwarf Red Rose Tea that badly.

I wonder if the city/province/port have made any headway consolidating the Smythe St parking lot/substation land, because the planned replacement substation off Paradise has not broken ground yet. I wonder what's taking so long?

I presume the substation move is a win for SJ taxpayers too: federal subsidies + vacant land available to develop on both ends of Union + useless remnant land occupied by new substation + taxpaying commercial tenant in the Paradise Row building, which I believe was vacant when the city bought the land, divided it in two, and sold the portion with the building.

A huge piece of sub station looked to have been removed, and Smythe St is being dug up, so wonder if process started. If I remember correctly it’s a long time line like 2024 or 2025. I too always thought Red Rose parking area low hanging fruit for development.

I'm pretty sure work is underway on the substation move, as pointed out it's a long process to shift that much infrastructure from one side of the highway to the other and make the move seamless for all electrical grid customers.

Agreed on both the Red Rose parking lot and the substation lots, both have enormous potential as the Fundy Quay project takes off and developers are looking at nearby lands. The parking lot is much easier because of its elevation though, whereas the substation lot would need to be raised higher above sea level, given that is the reason the city & SJ Energy got the federal infrastructure dollars in the first place.

Oh, I didn't know it would take so long. I had no idea they were actually moving infrastructure from Smythe to the new site, I had presumed it was all going to be new.

I presume Harbour Passage will be raised level to the boardwalk, along with this site, as far as Long Wharf (the street).

Red Rose lot is right up there with the lot south of Harbourfront Suites and King Square North, as far as ripeness for something impressive goes.

What is the Red Rose building used for these days?
I would love to see that surface lot get upgraded into a new development for sure. You could connect the pedway off to where the blue mile starts and probably to the 2nd level of Market Square.

Something like this would be kinda cool.

I have driven around lately and i was in disbelieve ! The shacks all over the city is out of control. Even out east all you see are houses with 2 windows and a door. They are very cheaply build /vinyl siding for the 80s. Many yards are full of debris,filthy siding,lawns full of weeds ,needs mowing you name it. Kanes corner area will have weeds growing higher then your car right in the median.Garbage is everywhere along the sides ot the roads and in the ditches. The industry in the city is over the top. Industry in a city should all be in just an industrial area not your back yards and water fronts? To top it off the city is extremely poor and should be the totally opposite . The taxes that should be generated for all this we should be driving on gold. LOL Irving that is a whole other story.

"Shacks": These are people's homes, and people tend to live in what they can afford. Saint John is still an affordable city for middle income families who dream of owning a home. Our neighborhoods have an immense amount of character and unity compared to other cities our size.

Upkeep: It's April, relax... spring cleaning is underway. Friends who visit me in SJ always comment on the clearly evident pride in home ownership (hanging flower baskets, we'll maintained gardens etc.).

Some public engagement opportunities are coming up this week for the City's Affordable Housing Plan:

City of Saint John hosting Affordable Housing virtual town hall engagement sessions

The City of Saint John is inviting anyone interested to participate in one of three town hall engagement sessions for the Affordable Housing Action Plan. Residents are encouraged to join in the discussion and provide input that will help identify the actions needed to guide the community’s response to maintain and create safe, suitable, and affordable housing options for all.

The Affordable Housing Action Plan launched in August 2021 and is a two-year collaborative project between non-profit affordable housing partners, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, the Government of New Brunswick, and the City of Saint John.

Initial findings of the Housing Needs Assessment will be presented followed by a targeted discussion with community members.

Town halls will take place virtually on the following dates:

Wednesday, April 20 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Thursday, April 21 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

Friday, April 22 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Fun long read on the canceled additional rail lines to the potash terminal. I wonder if this will get dusted off again? It's going 24/7 lately. Environmental Impact Assessment but some cool maps and plans regardless. I believed it never got further than conceptual drawings and did not know they had progressed this far.
