Don't start throwing around claims like that or you're going to curse all of the DTLA projects to unfinished oblivion

I've seen it up close from Fig @ 7th and they are painting the underside of each balcony black. I just looked at the renders and it seems it's probably just suppose to be a reflection of light from inside. There is wood on the 2 stories above the top of the parking podium going the full length of the tower, inside and out it seems. We will see the finished product. Either way, I love the dark glass and inset balconies as well. Looks so much better. The balconies on the proposed Olympia project are nice as well.

fantastic....knowing another big surface parking lot in dtla has bitten the dust is cause for celebration all by itself.....now waiting to see that apt tower rise & be fully completed is going to test my patience. But bit by bit, the hood is coming together.

Now if work can finally get started on the Olympia proj....next to the fwy....& that apt bldg just south of grand central mkt, I'll be even more relieved. Start of work on the Colburn school's concert hall at 2nd & Hill will be another gap I can hardly wait to see filled in.

As I was watching this vid, I recall when this was a big parking lot...another one that sat right next to the heavily trafficed harbor fwy....I remember when the metropolis bldgs were new devlpt in dt that I could hardly wait to see start & be completed.

^ the view from that hotel's windows shows a lot of gaps in dt still need to be filled in....but that's slowly but surely happening.

When the red line is extended & the connector line is completed....with stations near the broad museum & in little tokyo...that will be filling in another piece of the puzzle.

Two nice updates in DTLA today:

Mitsui Fudosan crane is getting the bump up!

It looks like the historic Orpheum Sign is getting refurbished and will soon be all lit up again

Love the cluster around 7th and Fig. Given the recent construction in that general area, gaps are appearing around Bunker Hill and the northern part of the Financial District. The view from Hollywood gives a better perspective of what I’m talking about.

Good to know the sign of the orpheum theater is being maintained....nothing is more disappointing when the upkeep of a property, such as floodlights, isn't tracked by an owner.

as for dtla in 2022, I watched this video & feel very old...I didn't realize how much time has passed since the gas company tower on 5th st was built. I could have sworn it rose around more like the late 1990s, but it actually was completed in 1991.

I also didn't know that drones were around over 30 yrs ago....I can see the parking lot south of the brockman bldg on 7th st, where whole foods is now located, cleared out. It looks like the site is being prepped for devlpt. But no way did work on the 8th at Grand apt bldg begin way back then....when interstate bank still existed. So the parking lot must have been given new asphalt makeover in the early 1990s?

I see all the gaps throughout south pk....no staples ctr, LA Live, etc, & it's a reminder of how dtla today is finally what it should have been more like yrs ago....although broadway was a nicer street over 60 yrs ago. But other sections of dt were not.

I watched a video of a youtuber originally from NYC who has recently relocated to miami bch. He's created a self sustaining youtube account for himself by just filming himself walking around a city. Most of his videos have been of NY, but he did ones of LA last yr. Now he's showing Miami bch. He mentioned how a part of its downtown reminded him of dtla, but some of his viewers said miami is much cleaner.

New devlpt there has also made miami look way nicer....decades ago it too had gaps or rundown sections in major parts of areas like its downtown. Same transformation is happening in other cities too. That's makes me realize that dtla is barely keeping up with the Jones.

edit: I forgot to mention that the flyover of the little tokyo area is a reminder of how that section of dtla was touch & go over 30 yrs ago. Large parking lots made up a lot of that hood. The nearby caltrans & new LAPD hdqtrs properties didn't exist & things like the Higgins bldg were either vacant or abandoned. So that part of dt is much better today than it was back then. The arts district barely existed....or it was so gritty, only struggling artists wanted to be there.

^ I was disappointed at first when this building was announced because I love 777 Fig and thought this building would be inferior architecturally and block 777. I'm not disappointed anymore... this is a great addition to the skyline and doesn't impair the view of 777 as much as I had feared.

Disappointed that the detailing has been removed. I think the copper would have been a wonderful accent to the black cladding.

That's my take on the renders as well. Seems to be a reflection of light off the underside of the balconies rather than a different colored material.

after the pandemic & even before then, I wondered if this business in eastern dtla would have staying power....but hope springs eternal....

Two Bit Circus, a popular entertainment and steam punk-themed destination in downtown Los Angeles' Arts District, plans to open a second location at the Shops at Park Lane in Dallas, Texas, sometime this fall.

spectrumnews1.com

After navigating through the challenges of the coronavirus pandemic and pandemic-related closures, things are looking up for Two Bit Circus. Two Bit Circus reopened in April of last year, and slowly, attendance has picked up. Because of pandemic-related restrictions, the company created an outdoor patio and dining area and now has a reservation-based entrance system to monitor the crowds. They are at about 90% of pre-pandemic attendance levels.

"We're almost there," he said. "We're moving into the path of normalcy. Business is good. It's ramping back up. The Arts District is ramping back up. We're feeling. We're excited."

Not trying to cause any debates but i think i got a clear picture on what the tallest residential tower in LA is.

According to wikipedia, the tallest at the moment is the unfinished Oceanwide tower at 677' but if you want to consider the tallest completed it's Metropolis Tower D at 647'

however Brookfield is the tallest of all the bunch at 695'. Unfortunately for Brookfield, Olympic&Hill just broke ground and will shoot past the entire pack at 760'

Does anyone know if San fran, Houston, or Austin/Dallas have a taller residential tower? All i know is the tallest in San fran is Rincon Hill which is shorter than all 4 towers above.

Right now, if built to plan (which now seems in doubt, sadly), The Beaudry (Brookfield's Residential) at 695' would be the tallest residential only tower West of Chicago.

The tallest residential in the cities you listed:
Austin - The Independent @ 690'
San Francisco - One Rincon Hill @ 641' (though they have some combo office/residential or hotel/residential slightly taller than that)
Dallas - Gates Republic Tower @ 602'
Houston - 2929 Weslayan @ 533'

The tallest of bunch including mixed office/hotel/residential would be Seattle's Rainier Square Tower (Office/Residential) @ 850'.

Rainier Square Tower is mixed use so it probably shouldn't be included on this list. Otherwise you'd have to include other mixed use buildings to maintain consistency. For example, Wilshire Grand with office/hotel is at 1100 ft and Sixth and Guadalupe will be 875 ft.

Looks like the tallest non-hotel, residential only building in Seattle is McKenzie Apartments at 446 ft.

Which gives Brookfield's "Beaudry" the title for now.

I really hope that Crescent Heights's 11th and Olive is the next that breaks ground. ODA is a fantastic architectural firm (got to see quite a few of their buildings when I lived in New York) and at 810' it would be massive in the skyline.

Here's the full article on Brookfield's renamed tower, "The Beaudry." New pics/renderings will follow:

Brookfield's big apartment tower tops out in Downtown Los Angeles

The high-rise is named "Beaudry"

Steven Sharp
Urbanize Los Angeles
April 14, 2022

Nearly three years after beginning work next to the Figat7th shopping mall in Downtown Los Angeles, developer Brookfield Properties and general contractor Webcor have completed vertical construction of Beaudry - one of the City's tallest residential buildings.

Located on a long-vacant site at 960 W. 7th Street (previously referred to as 755 S. Figueroa Street), the more than 600-foot-tall building will feature 785 residential units in a mix of studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom layouts, as well as parking for 831 vehicles in a podium garage.

“Today marks an important and exciting milestone as we top out and officially name Beaudry," said Brookfield executive vice president Bea Hsu in a news release. "We are proud to be part of DTLA’s evolution and growth as a place to live, work and play. This project has been a key initiative in Brookfield’s commitment to placemaking, adding DTLA’s finest new residences to what will now be a truly mixed-use superblock, with excellent access transit and amenities in the heart of downtown.”

Marmol Radziner is designing Beaudry, with LARGE Architecture serving as executive architect. The building is described as having a mid-century modern inspired, indoor-outdoor aesthetic, with floor-to-ceiling windows, terrace decks, and a lounge on the 57th floor. Other common features include a podium top amenity deck, as well as co-working spaces, a golf simulator, and a swimming pool.

Beaudry is currently expected to open for residents in early 2023.

The tower is billed as the final component of a master-planned development first conceived by the late developer Robert Maguire in the 1980s. Brookfield now owns the full site, which includes Figat7th as well as the neighboring 777 Figueroa and EY Center office towers. Prior to losing control of the site, Maguire had planned more offices at the 960 W. 7th Street as recently as 2006.

Brookfield, which is the largest office landlord in the Downtown market, is also planning to construct a 34-story residential building adjacent to Bank of America Plaza, and recently signed Adidas and Forever 21 as office tenants at the revamped California Market Center in the Fashion District.

Other investors are also planning high-rise buildings in the neighborhood surrounding Figat7th. Across the street, Mitsui Fudosan America is in construction for a similar 42-story apartment tower.
