Ottawa-Gatineau shots from Harley.

From near the Casino du Lac-Leamy, south towards Ottawa.

From Cummings Avenue in the old east end, looking west towards Dow's Lake (centre, top) and Downtown (top, towards the right).

that first shot is rather soul-sucking depiction of parkinglotlandmanship

Oh yeah, completely agree!

That part of Hull, near the casino is a pedestrian's worst nightmare. Believe it or not, there's a bus Transitway in that shot. You can see the tiny shelters just to the right of the top of the hotel.

That's something where Ottawa and OC Transpo deserve some praise; when they plan and build new O-Train Stations, they have a holistic approach that includes decent improvements to pedestrian and cycling connections. The STO in Gatineau built the RapiBus without really considering access to the new station, for the most part, and the entire route runs between ridiculous wide stroads or along highways.

I think thats a generic problem with BRT systems, they're really only ever built in cheap greenfields along large roads or highways. The proposed LRT in Gatineau will likely have much better pedestrian connections.

Is it just me, or has Holiday Inn gone downmarket? Or maybe it always was (along with Ramada, Days Inn, etc.).

Agreed. I will never understand why they insist on that green lighting scheme on all their buildings....even if it doesn't make sense! This building in Kanata is awful in its own right but made worse by the gross lighting

It's become a chain with locations at every highway exit where you generally stay for one night on your way to somewhere else.

When you and I were kids I seem to recall it was more of a destination hotel where a family on holiday would stay for several days if they were spending the week in a city.

My wife and kids are more posh than me and so when we're on the road we usually stay at a Holiday Inn or a Hampton Inn which are one level above the Days Inns and Travelodges of the world.

You get a room for 129 to 179 with free parking and an all-you-can-eat hot breakfast before hitting the road.

Based on my observations over the years that's what 90-95% of the people who stay there do.

I've noticed a few Holiday Inn Expresses drop the Express name. (assuming Express was introduced as a lower level version of the Holiday Inn)

The Montreal Holiday Inn is part of a larger apartment or condominium complex in the downtown. It's apples to oranges comparing to a suburb hotel.

I agree. That green cheapens the look

I was making a very tongue in cheek comparison
The Holiday Inn in Gatineau is not a suburban hotel though, it's very central and right next to a massive casino.

This central location is not downtown Hull either.

I'm not sure, but it looks like a long exposure as the stars are streaking. I've witnessed them 3 times in the city but I think most people who have never seen them before might just pass them off as light pollution. They are very faint and hard to spot. The only thing I find odd is that they are more east then north in that shot.
