On a Thursday evening in 97 the Union brothers in C.B called up the TV reporters and burned down a non union Apartment under construction. The next day the coordinator for National Training for Sears asked if anyone wondered why there was no Sears Store in Sydney. He said as long as he was alive there would never be one and exactly for stunts like the night before.
I remember that well. It was utterly shameful, and even more so when there were zero consequences for those responsible. The mentality there was (maybe still is) that the developer had it coming for not giving in to the extortion attempted by the unions. It was like dealing with the Mafia.

It’s not entirely unreasonable though. The course has probably created some local jobs (many of which are likely low-paying). In exchange the community has gotten a housing crisis.

The Cabot Caddies get about $100 per day tax free in a depressed economy.

Call it what you will but the local economy virtually booms in the Summer. I have business dealings with the very small Kent in Inverness and lets just say the sales per Sq foot are the best of the three Kent stores in C.B. When the world opens up next year the whole Island is going to experience a tourism boom.

Everywhere has a housing crisis it seems. Having been in Inverness several times in the '90s, much of the housing stock there was slum-quality at best. Certainly property prices have now shot upwards and made many of the owners of those old run-down properties a large windfall. I looked that real estate there some years ago knowing what Cabot would do and now wish I had pulled the trigger on it. But that surely cannot be a good thing I suppose. Better to have them worthless.

Looks like work has fully started on tearing up the road. The ramp up to Cogswell from Lower Water is coming down.

Cogswell Construction Update Report to Regional Council

"The following construction activities are expected to be completed in the next 6 months (November 2022):

• Completion of Detour Roads 1 and 2 , including underground services, allowing for realignment of northbound/southbound vehicular traffic through the project area. Detour Roads 1 and 2 are expected to open in early fall at which time the central part of the interchange and remaining ramps will be closed.
• Completion of final condition street realignment and pedestrian activated crossing at Upper Water Street and Hollis Street.
• Closure of Valour Way at Upper Water Street and Upper Water Street at Cornwallis & Barrington (Detour Road 4) to allow commencement of construction of roundabout.
• Completion of the temporary Barrington MUP through the site.
• Completion of land acquisition from Metropolitan Entertainment Group (MEG) Holdings and easement agreement with Great West Life Realty Advisors (GWLRA).
• Commencement of construction of Granville Park.

It is great that Granville Park could be under construction in under 6 months. It's an important part, maybe the most important, and is good that it won't be left until the end.

However I still believe that Cogswell will be a bit of a missed opportunity if underground infrastructure like pedestrian paths and transitways are not built. Granville Park could have an entrance to a tunnel system that connects the ferry and buses, the pedway system, and public washrooms. But this doesn't seem to be in the cards for now.

It seems ridiculous to be building a park this early in the middle of what will be a years-long construction project filled with heavy equipment. Cannot imagine it being a very appealing location.

This is interesting, as it's kind of a pain to get through there at the moment. I'm curious if they'll tie it in at all with the bike lanes.

Looks like they're hauling away lots of dirt. Lets hope it doesn't end up in Dartmouth Cove.

Nice to see some progress, even though it's a little behind schedule.
