It was a mega urban renewal plan...east of Main. Residential and recreation. Beautiful wood model. Old school! I think there is an image of the model in the Winnipeg Unbuilt thread. I was trying to find it. Any...have fond memories of that tunnel, strange as that may sound (even to my own ears).

I remember that.

The funny thing about those tunnels is that the N-S one that connects the Main St. underpass with City Hall (council bldg and admin bldg) is this big, wide, beautifully finished tunnel which is comically overbuilt for the handful of staff a day that passed through it en route to the parkade. I'm not sure who'd use it anymore now that the PSB and parkade are gone, though....

But the Main St. underpass itself is this dingy glorified utility tunnel similar to what U of M students scurry through to get around campus on cold days.

Was it this model:

This is the model of the Cultural Centre Renewal scheme. Which, luckily, never came to fruition.

I agree that it is a beautiful model and it is fun to look at but that plan would have decimated the exchange district and added freeways downtown.

Still, a very interesting piece of Winnipeg design history.

There is a great CBC Article on it with more pictures here:https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/manitoba/exchange-district-cultural-centre-renewal-scheme-1.4803928

Hey Peg
Thanks for finding the model...and for the article - very interesting. Not surprising that Juba (Mayor Monorail) would have been a cheerleader for such modernistic plan. But at that time there was no perceived value in a bunch of old buildings. Thankfully we have learned something. Sadly though, we haven't learned enough
In the early 80's there was a concept to convert the old steam plant and the pumping station into a science center. Didn't happen. And generally, I don't think there has been enough focus on making the area truly livable - with open space and amenties. Having said that, Mayor Murray (hopefully our next mayor) is to be commended for paving the way for Waterfront drive and residential there, without interfering with aesthetic of the East exchange. One final thought - noting that the Lord Selkirk residential project was the first Phase of this master plan - one can only imagine the mess that could have been created if the plan progressed to phases 2 and 3! Cheers

That plan, while it would have been very destructive to the old building stock and completely have ruined the area (as I think we can all agree), would have created what looks like a pretty awesome looking park heading down towards the riverfront area. There's definitely something to be said for public realm stuff like that. I still think there's a good opportunity to do something truly special along the river with the Alexander Docks and further north, so I really hope that something really awesome that connects the public space intimately to the waterfront can be built eventually.

Likely getting ready for piling. As in drilling test holes at each pile. Good news.

Appeal coming for 127 Bannatyne height variance. They want 123', director only approves 110'.

If they want to build more that’s fine because filling surface parking lots are our most important priority for downtown.

90 more units to the Exchange with commercial on the bottom how could that be a bad thing?

So, was 127 Bannatyne finally approved? Or did the NIMBY's come out in droves again? Looks like the development across the street may go ahead.

Looks like it's on the agenda at City Hall today.

Also looks like a bunch of people in opposition of the matter.

One of my professors husband who is the former department head of Landscape Architecture at the U of M is attending in opposition. We did a studio project in the Exchange last semester and everything was about preserving the character of the Exchange which essentially capped all our structures to 8 storeys or shorter.

Since they both have PHDs in the field, they have very strong opinions on this matter and it’s going to be a very entertaining meeting to say the least.

This notion that the Exchange District needs to be frozen in time for all eternity is absolutely bogus. You want a historical theme park, go live here:

The castle is out of place with the existing 1-3 storey structures though.
