I am very optimistic about that one and a couple other projects as well.

We will see a lot of progress in 2022 and even more in 2023.

The coming Olympics will likely push the city to progress even further.

I hope that you’re right. I was watching a YouTube video the other day that had an LA City Planner and an affordable housing developer among others and they said that there’s a huge backlog of TOC projects that are fully approved but haven’t yet filed building permits. Their opinion was that’s partly due to some being speculative but also because many may no longer pencil out given the huge increase in costs over just the last 2 years.

^ Many of them are speculative, and I get emails from Colliers real estate multiple times per week trying to sell fully-entitled projects. So far, only a handful of them have been downtown, and none of them are major towers, outside of the one in City West along 2nd Street whose name escapes me. That one just cut it's asking price by $900k.

Chain link fencing in around the Onni site at Olympic and Hill. Im guessing they will wait till the end of the month to finish up the monthly parking requirements and then move forward.

This would be a massive groundbreaking. Once done it will be the 4th tallest building in Los Angeles and the 7th tallest in the state of California.

^ Wow, it's crazy to think it, but it's true. At 760 feet, this would beat 2 Cal Plaza by 10 feet to be the 4th tallest. Hopefully it's short-lived, and we see the Crescent Heights tower break ground by end of year, which would be the 4th building to break 800ft in LA.

You beat me too it! And I don't think that it's a false alarm, such as a repaving. The pedestrian barrier on the road shows that they intend it to be long term.

Does that lot even have monthly parking aside from the Onni building across the alley? I don't think that there's any parking arrangement with the church/Mayan. Maybe it could be as soon as this weekend?

Either way, I've been waiting for this one for a long time. It will be good to see dirt moving sometime soon.

If that's a sign the proj will break ground sooner rather than later, that's a nice surprise. Although it has been talked about for over 2 yrs, something about the location made me think its scheduling would be slower, not faster....I thought the apt bldg proposed for the NE corner of 4th & Hill st would start way sooner than onni's project would. That's because the bldg south of grand central mkt will be above a station of the red line, is supposed to have moderate priced apts & has been in the works for a lot longer. Demo permits were also issued over a yr ago for the small food stand that has sat near that corner for decades.

I can never figure out why certain projs mover faster & other projs move slower than expected.

This is the one I want to break ground the most. I live 100 feet away and I want to watch it go up!

Crescent Heights is my favorite too. That and the tower at 11th and Hill that's a block south of the Onni tower. If we got all three of these, there would be a nice cluster that pushes the height of the skyline further south and east.

Exciting news about the Onni project. I am willing to bet they use the same materials as Hope+Flower though, which is such a bummer. We shall see!

Yeah, I'm a little worried about that too. Hope + Flower materials are awful, and the renderings of this tower don't even try to hide the horrid spandrel glass. Holding out hope for this one, even though it's not on Hope Street.

Wow, you're right--that really will shift the skyline's center of gravity a bit south and east. It will be by far the tallest tower in that part of downtown.

An update on the AC/Moxy hotel development downtown:

Convention Center-adjacent hotel tower in the home stretch

An AC Hotel and a Moxy under the same roof

Steven Sharp
Urbanize Los Angeles
March 22, 2022

Across the street from the Convention Center in Downtown Los Angeles, construction is in the home stretch for Lightstone's dual-branded hotel tower at the intersection of Figueroa Street and Pico Boulevard.

The project, which replaced a surface parking lot and a two-story commercial building, consists of a 37-story tower which will place the Moxy Los Angeles Downtown and AC Hotel Los Angeles Downtown under a
single roof. The 600,000-square-foot building will feature 727 guest rooms, with 380 to be operated by Moxy and 347 rooms under the AC Hotel flag.

Additionally, the project includes 65,000 square feet of meeting rooms, restaurants, and bars, including 12 concepts designed by Basile Studio. At street level, plans call for 8,000 square feet of retail space

Gensler designed the tower, which has a glass facade and metal fins wrapping the trunk of the building. The building podium, which contains 300 parking spaces, is wrapped in 22,000 square feet of digital signage
and capped by a landscaped pool deck. Plans also call for a sky lobby with a bar on the 34th floor of the tower.

Completion of the AC Hotel and Moxy is expected by late 2022.

The AC and Moxy hotels are the initial component of the larger Fig + Pico development, which will also encompass an adjoining parking lot at Pico and Flower Street. Lightstone has received approvals to build a smaller
27-story tower containing 378 guest rooms, which has previously been slated for a Hilton Garden Inn.

Other large hotels planned near the Convention Center include a 37-story tower slated for a site a few blocks west on Pico, and a proposed 861-room expansion of the J.W. Marriott at L.A. Live.

In its hometown of New York, Lightstone is also developing two additional Moxy hotels in Brooklyn and Manhattan. Both are also expected to open in 2022.

this kind of relates to dtla....garcetti drops by the lucas museum, the 6th st bridge and the problem of homelessness really hurts dt....over $600,000 to build one unit of affordable housing in LA? With that type of money, how come the apt bldg at the NE corner of 4th & Hill isn't underway right now!

getting to dtla for many ppl, such as the ones who'll be staying at that new hotel ^....requires first going through lax....garcetti shows what's going on there too....some references to all the building of new transit lines too.

Onni site at Olympic and Hill looks like it's officially moving forward, fully fenced and draped repeatedly with their Logo! Nice to see on lunchtime walk.

Sounds like we had similar lunchbreaks (I had Shekarchi).

Still has cars parked in the lot, but here are some pics of the current state.

Nice. Their Long Beach Tower topped out a few weeks ago so I figured this one would be next and soon. Here's hoping they grace us with their arts district tower at the same time.

Seeing how 520 Mateo seems to be restarting....what are the chances we'll see another corrupt, allegedly, project get life again? aka what was being billed as our new tallest...... I know its a long shot since its a Chinese developer, but I heard China may be getting ready to ease some fluidity (Cash Flow) with its developers since their plan to reel them in kinda back fired disastrously. So.....fingers crossed?
