The city names in the teams are mostly just place-holders. There's no other implication that the players have to be local, similar to how not all Raptors or Leafs are from Toronto.
Scotiabank Arena has already hosted esports events in the past, and Toronto will be hosting the League of Legends World Championships along with four other cities later this year. This venue should do fine.
Good that its privately financed. Leafs and Raptors have to present on the ice or court in order to play. Obviously, the players on those teams hail from all around the world.
Scotiabank arena hosting an esports event doesn't say much to me. How many spectators attended and how big of a global attraction was it compared to regular league play. You're right though. I guess I would have preferred the direction of darts or pool over NBA/NHL.
I still don't understand the appeal of live esports. The reason I like going to hockey games is because of how different the sport feels live. You can see the entire game better, you notice things outside the main action that you wouldn't see when the camera is only focused on the front of the net, the sounds are way more intense, etc. Esports would be like going to the game and only watching the jumbotron. I guess it's primarily about the atmosphere though. Hearing the crowd go wild when someone clutches a win in whatever game they're playing. I'm pretty sure some arenas have sold standing only tickets where you are in the concourse watching the game on the tvs so I guess this isn't that much different.
Sounds like you’ve talked yourself out of “not seeing the appeal of live esports”
My cousin from Australia came all the way to Vancouver a couple years ago for a week to attend an Esports event that was held here over a few days. They are a pretty big deal for some.
I would guess it was a multi-million dollar prize event that attracted the top celebrities players for whichever game or games the event hosted in the world. The average salary in the Overwatch league is 50k. It's like comparing NHL to the OHL.
^ It’s a used car dealership. The building is very old and vintage so I understand why they would keep it, but the final result is just weird. That building could have been disassembled and re-assembled in another location imo.

Agreed. Would have been a nice river side café along the Sir John A. Parkway.
I'm glad they're keeping the building, but it looks realy clunky when attached to such a large building. It doesn't really setback toward the structure either, it just looks pasted on.
The other proposal looks decent. Better than the RLA schlock at least.
They went crazy on the details; random patterns on both the window wall and the balconies. Doesn't look too bad in the renderings. The podium facade is as "complex" but, without the needed transitioning between the styles. That looks awkward. Still, it's a princess compared to the Ottawa proposals.
Well, I don't expect a good looking buildig based on that rendering. I'm not sure what kind of praise to give this project, but it's good to see intensification in downtown Kitchener continue in any case.
I think those Station Park buildings may look just as good as this DTK project frankly, once they build them out.
No offense but, over a $1000 a square foot to own in a hulking max density tower in downtown Kitchener is more insane than $2000 a square foot (note: I don't know what the average actually is) to own in a hulking max density tower in the Entertainment District in downtown Toronto. Holy shit!
You don't own your balcony. The condo corp dictates what you can do on it and when you can use it. Adding the balcony space to make these insane prices a little less insane is disingenuous
I took a look at the 394 sq. ft. unit diagram/layout. They seem to be confusing 'Living' with 'Dying' and 'Balcony' with 'Ledge'. No one lives in a living room that size...c'mon, exist maybe. If I had to pay those prices to live in a tiny box in Kitchener...well, I would not. Cut the number of units in this building in half and maybe you'd have something.
They'll sell. The universities cater to foreign students. The buyers will flip it upon graduation to the next generation of parents with students and probably for more.

Most of the units will probably be sold to GTA investors.

Perhaps. Many of the condos sold and flipped in the past 10 years in Kitchener Waterloo weren't to GTA investors. These layouts look the same as those condos geared towards the student population.
