Edmonton's plans for e-transit ambitious, but threatened by sprawl, car-loving past, report says

Ishita Verma · CBC News

While Edmonton is often a leader in Canada, even North America, in implementing sustainable public transit options, decades of car-oriented development and urban sprawl may be holding it back, says a report commissioned by Transport Canada.

Canadian Urban Mobility 2.0 looks at how open Canadian municipalities are to introduce innovation around sustainable transportation.

The report studied how people move around — whether by cycling, mass transit, or personal vehicles — in cities such as Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Toronto, Ottawa-Gatineau, Montreal and Halifax.

Starting this week public transit users in Hamilton will get a free ride on @hsr when they connect to GO using their PRESTO card. @metrolinx is also offering youth and post-secondary students a 40% discount when they pay with PRESTO

Also, Quebec will pay a grant of $ 1.12 billion to the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) to continue planning the project and finance the programs for asset maintenance and universal accessibility of the metro.
Quote:
Chantal Rouleau, Minister for Transport and Minister responsible for Greater Montréal and the Montreal region, accompanied by the Minister of Canadian Heritage and Quebec Lieutenant, Pablo Rodriguez, the Mayor of Montreal, Valérie Plante, and the Chairman of the Board of directors of the Société de transport de Montréal, Éric Alan Caldwell, announced the investments this afternoon.

Possible disruption of GO Milton train service this week with the potential CP Rail strike. Disrupt the Lakeshore West train service to Hamilton station as well, but West Harbour should be okay.

I just want the extension to happen already lol... This is what, the 5th time now that the blue line extension has been 'announced' and 'confirmed'?

Yes but this time it’s for real. Utility work is already underway and station construction will start this summer.

Dear god, I actually thought the blue line extension had already been approved and that preliminary work had already begun like, last year.

What a disaster this blue line.

A measly 5 station extension, that's going to feed directly into an already over-crowded orange line and a messy, awkward and sprawly Jean-Talon metro.

Everybody who's been involved with this dossier should be embarrassed.

Or you know, the centre highest frequency/capacity section of the REM.

You mean like how the Yonge North extension is being done?

I guess so. I don't know anything about TO transit, to be honest.

Expansion to an already overcrowded line. And Queen's Park continues to build more and more lines dumping passengers on that same line.

The Ontario Line (Downtown Relief Line) might actually get built after decades on the table, which should relieve some pressure on the Yonge Line, as should the REM on the Orange once it opens.

I think the western part of the Ontario Line seems a bit contrived especially where it dips south of King down to Ontario Place. Liberty Village is already serviced fairly decently by the 501 line.

I think it'd almost be better to priortize extending the eastern portion of the line further north to Shops at Don Mills , York Mills Rd, and Fairview Mall [quite a dense highrise cluster around here ] and put the entire western part of the line on hold until more funding is secured.

With the current iteration, it seems they'll be a lot of congestion of people getting off to catch buses and express buses at Science Center to venture further north.

That part of the line is key to servicing jobs rich and very high density areas west of downtown which have generally terrible transit access right now and are growing extremely rapidly. It'll do far more good than an extension to Don Mills would.

I would have thought then , if that is the case, that the line should at least be extended to Humber Bay Shores, a very dense area that would be the perfect candidate to encourage more residents to get out of their cars.

Ontario Place dosent seem like a sensible stop to me. Wouldn't it be better to continue westward along Queen or King instead? Apparently the sharp curvature in the subway line will be quite expensive compared to if it continued straight west or curved on a more gentle angle down to the northern periphery of Liberty Village. Just my armchair thoughts.

Ontario Place is a bit misleading as a stop descriptor - it's really a Liberty Village stop, and will allow for passengers on the Lakeshore West corridor to transfer to the subway here to travel to their jobs in the core, instead of at Union. It acts as a sort of "union station relief line" because of this.

It's very well thought out, actually.

The extension to Humber Bay would be useful as well, but it's another significant distance down the lake shore and doesn't have a lot of density in between. I definitely think it should be considered for an extension in the future.

So the 5 station extension will cost the same amount as the 67km REM, absolute financial madness
