They've planned to replace it for almost a decade now.

Yup the replacement was already being planned before Vancouver House was even rezoned. Funny how the city with less then half the population was able to fund the centre 50yrs ago but now can't see to maintain the status quo. They had been waiting on the funds from redeveloping the loop, although I'm sure had this not happened they would've continued to push the replacement down the road even further.

Any reason for no windows on this building?
Would make a good art gallery.

This is new to me, but looks pretty uninspired (it even seems to keep the massage place storefront).
(ie doesn't look like it's by Arno Matis)

807 Seymour - U/C? Paused? Cancelled?

Does anyone know the project - The Seymour is still underway? Looks to me that the old lot was torn apart but no progress / update since early 2020. Could it be that the demand for DT offices have dwindled and momentum for a building like isn't there anymore?

They were trying to sell it as strata, which seems to be the problem; there's still demand for new space in other buildings. The same developer, Bonnis Properties, are currently clearing the site of 980 Granville for an office building which has more space, but larger floorplates than The Seymour. There they were offering the space for lease, and have already found tenants for 50% to Cornerstone Community College and the Crossmedia Group, so construction could presumably start immediately. They're still trying to pre-sell Seymour, but they have the option of trying to lease it instead of making it a strata.

Nope, none at all. Whoever thought a near windowless bunker was appropriate for this waterfront site needs their head examined.

I see the building has now been closed again due to safety concerns. Time to draw up plans for a really stunning building that takes full advantage of the incomparable location.

I wasn't aware the building was in such poor condition.
i am surprised they let it get *that* bad. i get not doing upkeep and maintenance to keep the space usable since this city is about as f'd up on its priorities as you can get. how many hotels for vagrants did they buy last year?

what i don't get is the lack of upkeep to massive liability issues. you would think that would push them to do some upkeep just for that reason alone. it seems like stone/concrete panels falling off a building would pose some kind of "hey, maybe we don't want to squish people to death?" questions.

It's the Parks Board - they are not the same as the City of Vancouver. Seperately elected Commissioners, who are responsible for parks and recreational facilities (including a few paths like the seawall).

That looks like stucco, or plywood, not stone or concrete. The same thing happened to 777 West Broadway (a not that old office building) some years ago. If water gets in behind the flashing the board can get saturated, too heavy for the frame it's fixed to, and falls off.

i thought they were some kind of panel, not stucco. though i havent been there except once, on a school trip. cant say i paid too much attention.

though either way, i imagine someone could die being under that if it fell on them still. since this building was flagged as terrible in 2014, and since it was visible on Street View from 2020, you'd think someone at some point would be doing some kind of inspections.

when you have a building falling apart in 2014, and you proceed to ignore it, and not even look at it. then sorry, that's a huge red flag.

i find Vancouver interesting, we had less people, less developments, less money. yet most of the CoV infrastructure dates to the 60-70s and has been ignored for 30yrs. yet Vancouver is broke now. not funny, haha, more like funny in disgraceful/sad/pathetic.

I was thinking the same thing. Where the heck is WorkSafeBC. I've showed up on a construction site where they told me to go home, the site was shutdown by WorkSafeBC, the site was deem unsafe for workers. Wouldn't this building also be unsafe for workers?

It looks like some of the metal frame behind the wall also pulled away so either that failed or it got pulled down but that seems unlikely considering the rest of it sheared away with n parts of the panel remaining. The inner corner also is falling off but I can't tell if it's plywood with a trim attached to it or a thicker slab of some kind of composite. It does look cosmetic and not part of the superstructure.

Well, you see, you take the money from the infrastructure maintenance budget and put it in the bribe budget....

There is an exciting opportunity for a talented professional to join the site construction team in downtown Vancouver as a Site Superintendent. This role will responsible for the construction of an 11-story, 72-unit building with commercial space on the bottom located on 454 West Pender Street. The ideal candidate has an excellent knowledge of commercial construction, is able to help push trades, manage a team, and manage the reporting aspects required to satisfy ownership.
