^^ I worry that any deviation from cylinder will end up having balconies like the ones on Claridge in Ottawa.. a mess! ...so Cylinder it is.. should be harder to fuck that up. ...i'm hoping.

KPMB is at the helm and the developer is Cityzen, who has done some great stuff, so I'm not too concerned. It'll probably be the best looking tower west of Mississauga in Ontario.

Hamilton, long home of terribly ugly stuff and barely anything new construction as the finances simply didn't work, is suddenly full of attractive, taller buildings getting approved (though still lots of bad stuff, too)

I'd hold off on the McMaster Grad residence. It's a private student residence from the developer of White shack condos in Toronto. Potential to be a spandrel disaster that makes One Yorkville look sophisticated.

Proposal at 50 The Driveway in Ottawa's Golden Triangle (east end of Centretown), along the Rideau Canal. It will incorporate parts of a mid-century office building that housed the Canadian Nurses Association, including the lantern feature on top.

That's one of the ugliest gimmick designs in a city full of ugly gimmick architecture.

I hope the cash strapped city isn't contributing a dime to this. I do see a market for these league like Overwatch and Call of Duty. A 10,000 seat, major league stadium for fans to gather and watch players sit infront of screens playing war role playing games is still untested

Well, maybe we'll have two ugly hotels to stare at in this area.

I'm kidding mostly, considering these aren't finalized renderings, but I still don' have much confidence in a good design for the hotel, or the arena. I'm glad another entertainment venue is (to be) built in this area, having more entertainment in this city is always a good thing, and with future Ontario Line access nearby, there'll be great connectivity for this area from most of downtown.

I realy like the look of that hotel proposed for the Mont Ste-Marie ski resort. It's a fairly simple deisgn, but it's an attrative combination of modernist lines and contemporary materials.

I don't know why you guys don't like that E-Sport design. The X grounds is the perfect location for experimental architecture. The hotel Structure is a bit plain but it works with the new gamer arena.

I also love the Mt St Marie hotel, it has a very 70's feel to it.

Zoning is done. This is for site plan approval. The budget Manulife Place Calgary with the waist high carbunkle design is not likely to change should they get this project off the ground in the next few years.

That is godawful and in a prominent location as well. Toronto is apparently a pretty big esports hotspot though, wouldn't be surprised if it's a successful endeavor.

I don't see anything innovative in the design stadium. The concept is still experimental and spending hundreds of millions on it is fine as long as not a single public dollar goes into it. I've seen a few league games on tv. It's a split screen between the player playing and their avatar warring. I tended to watch the avatars than the players who stared at their screens than leaped up from their seats when a point was scored. I just don't see that translating well in a 10,000 seat stadium. Not only that , the Toronto team players don't all live or play in Toronto.

The city names in the teams are mostly just place-holders. There's no other implication that the players have to be local, similar to how not all Raptors or Leafs are from Toronto.

Scotiabank Arena has already hosted esports events in the past, and Toronto will be hosting the League of Legends World Championships along with four other cities later this year. This venue should do fine.

I preferred the older design as it was way more out there, what we have now is a much more conservative version. But both design work well for the fair grounds. I'd like to keep the new arena design with the old tower design.

I still don't understand the appeal of live esports. The reason I like going to hockey games is because of how different the sport feels live. You can see the entire game better, you notice things outside the main action that you wouldn't see when the camera is only focused on the front of the net, the sounds are way more intense, etc. Esports would be like going to the game and only watching the jumbotron. I guess it's primarily about the atmosphere though. Hearing the crowd go wild when someone clutches a win in whatever game they're playing. I'm pretty sure some arenas have sold standing only tickets where you are in the concourse watching the game on the tvs so I guess this isn't that much different.

A residential apartment tower will rise on the site of a former roller bearing factory that dominated the St. Thomas industrial sector for 66 years.

A city council committee has approved a 14-storey tower with more than 160 units for the former Timken Canada site at 1055 Talbot St.

It’s the latest and highest-profile development for the site where two separate developments have added commercial and retail businesses to the property east of the city core.

The land was bought in a partnership between Fast Forward Ventures Inc. and Canadian Commercial, which had purchased about 13 acres of the 20-acre (eight-hectare) site about a year and a half ago and already has built a commercial plaza there. About 2.5 acres (one hectare) of the site will be home to the tower near the corner of Talbot and First streets.

“We feel very fortunate, this is such a unique property,” said Diana House, a developer with Canadian Commercial.

Looks like they're using a more traditional theatre-style plan than "arena" though. Which is smarter for its flexibility in being able to host other kinds of entertainment.

Is this typical of other e-sports venues?
