That's a great question. I'm not really sure but there's quite a few now. A new one went up this week too. I'll try and get a count of them and let you know.

I don't find Vancouver very Asian although I'm not that familiar with them. I think of skylines created from masterplanned, big blocks development in China or South Korea. Large floor plate office towers surrounded by decuplets of residential towers in a big block park setting. Japan is chaotic with large floor plate towers dominating dispersed skylines.

I don't see any commie blocks, just typical 1960s & 70s apartment towers built in the prevailing modernist style of the era.

The slender scale of them is essentially the antithesis of "commie blocks". Same Era, different form

I was gonna say. Isn’t the epitome of a ‘commie block’, the Khrushchyovka, defined by its low squat proportions? Is being precast all it takes to be considered ‘Soviet’ these days?

Yes, lots of ugly 60s buildings in the West End: one major area of downtown Vancouver most residents are resistant to redevelopments and certainly an ugly part of town. Since the 80s, only selected pockets of 3 commercial streets are allowed taller developments, meaning many developers just shun the area and head eleswhere, with many building in the suburb municipalities instead.
