Ironically, it's probably more inspired by Ukrainian architecture. I'm not actually 100% sure of the exact history of the 'Fairmount Manor', but the 'Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception' is a Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral that is on the next block over. Pope John Paul II even visited it in the 70s.

Re: turning it into a park - no way. There are a ton of parks in the surrounding area and the main proponents for it turning into one are a bunch of Mount Airy people who send their kids to daycare on 11th street.

Well my first choice would be a market rate project. But with the city involved, the developer changes, and neighborhood complaints, I don't expect any movement here for a while, which is why I opted for a park since at least it would be (hopefully) maintained.

Having grown up around the corner from these, and having never been to Chechnya, I would say "no; not Chechnya."

What I would say is that they were affordable homes built during a specific period, that for decades provided decent housing to families with limited resources, well-kept grounds and play areas, and across the street from an excellent elementary school (mine).

The change by OTIS is unfortunate, but I think getting the three lane option on 9th St is a big win for Italian market. Washington Ave feels like a moat currently. That combined with the development on the SE corner should help it feel more like a continuous corridor to the south.

Demolition permit issued today for the strip mall at northwest corner of 43rd and Chestnut Streets for the 7-story apartment building that will rise there. According to the permit, all of the stores are now vacant?

No they did not change that f*ckin design. that's really a shame.

So I emailed the PHC about this. Their response:

“The design did change between the Historical Commission review and the submission for the building permit. The staff approved the building permit application, because the Historical Commission does not have full or plenary jurisdiction over the new construction. The project was reviewed by the PHC for review and comment only, meaning that there was no official approval offered, because the PHC can only comment on the application since the property is listed as a vacant lot in the Old City Historic District inventory. Wow. Does anyone have access to those comments? Because if anyone on the architectural committee or the historical commission made comments that indicated that the new design would be an improvement over the old design, they are not fit to do their job.

Yep, I can confirm stores are vacant and there is a construction fence up as of yesterday, demo is imminent. LQ moved to 4233, NextLVL and is huge.
