Not quite as over-the-top ridiculous as their map of downtown Moncton, but their map of downtown Fredericton is... interesting... as well.

Somehow they've included a large part of the North side of the river as being "downtown". It's an hour walk away from the actual core of Fredericton ffs. No wonder Statcan have their downtown population is as high as it is.

I wouldn't say an hour but it's clear that the StatCan definition of downtown is not the same as what is colloquially known as downtown in each CMA. It seems that they're basically looking at the contiguous area in each CMA that is most dense and has mixed uses (jobs and residents).

Yeah, honestly, Freddy's map doesn't look too bad as a representation of the "core" of the city. The wings may be a bit wide, but going along Main street, Union street and Woodstock road, you definitely feel the urbaness for most of that space. Maybe a better term could have been made besides "Downtown", but the commercial corridor from Superstore to Giant Tiger on the Northside is certainly a "Downtown" area of Fredericton commercially at least; and would be contiguous with the actual core of the city were it not for the river.

That's right, which is why "downtown Moncton" as they define it - giant empty undevelopable areas south of West Main between the two bridges and the Halls Creek/traffic circle area - should instead be modified to include actual neighbourhoods east of Vaughan Harvey/MacBeath and south of Morton. These are much much closer to "downtown" than the northside is to Fredericton, they're densely populated and have thousands of jobs (2 hospitals and U de M for starters).

Our "downtown" population count would easily double if they used our allotment of space on actual neighbourhoods rather than cherry-picking all the unusable land by the river lol.

I love these kind of projects. Breathing new life into these type buildings really improves their looks, and enhances the neighbourhood. Like the King & Main building. I hope we see more of this. Now if they could only get on with the 100 Cameron Street project!

Are you referring to the reconversion and expansion of the office building to a seniors apartment complex? That project has been cancelled, and the building will remain an office complex. McKenzie College has moved back into the building.

Or, are you referring to the Midtown Cafe which will occupy a portion of the ground floor of the building? According to their Facebook page, (https://www.facebook.com/Midtown-Café-105893301874615), they are still awaiting some city permits before they can proceed to final construction.

I was referring to the plan to convert the building to seniors apartments. They also were going to construct a 2nd building on the lot. I know the plans had come up a couple of times through the years, but I didn't realize the project had been cancelled. I don't know why, but for some reason I've been a fan of the project, and was hoping it would proceed.

Historic Canadian aircraft set to get a facelift, courtesy of the City of Moncton
CF-100 in Centennial Park one of four monuments to be refurbished this year

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/new-brunswick/moncton-cf-100-restoration-1.6346963

All four monuments at the entrance to Centennial Park will be refurbished this year, at a cost of $500,000.

These include:
- Avro CF-100 fighter jet built in 1955 and served with the RCAF
- anchor from the HMCS Magnificent, an RCN aircraft carrier also from the 1950s
- WW2 Sherman tank which served with the Canadian Army in Italy.
- Engine 5270, a CNR steam locomotive, built in Moncton near the end of WW1.

The trickiest restoration by far will be the aircraft.

According to 91.9 FM, tenders have already been issued for the new RCMP building (apparently back in December). They are to be returned and reviewed by March. Presumably construction will begin later this summer or this fall.

Keep in mind it's only once the tender results are in that the city will have an accurate construction cost (versus previous estimates) and then council will hold a final vote whether to award construction. It's not a done deal until then.

Love seeing the 5270 when driving into Moncton!

If only they could get rid of that canopy so that the public can see what it really looks like.

The old Ideal Muffler shop on the NW corner of Main & Vaughan Harvey has been demolished.

With the city now looking for RFPs for their own piece of land on this corner as well, are we looking at a potential consolidation of properties and a possible significant redevelopment???

I believe so. I can't imagine the city allowing something underwhelming on such a prominent corner. Something a bit taller than the Tannery Place buildings would make sense. It will be interesting to see what developer steps forward.
