With the way college athletics is going, I think the most likely expansions of RES in the future will involve adding more box seats and improving the concourses/exterior. I've heard that the foundations are already in place on the east side for an identical press box as the one on the west side (unconfirmed rumor). These sound like good additions for the Olympics too but I think the stadium is perfectly fine as it is now to host the Olympics again without any changes.

I do wonder if they could expand on the north side by capping and building over TRAX. It would eliminate the views of the field house and campus but it might be doable.

What I'm more excited for if we get the Olympics again is increased funding and interest in expanding TRAX and other mass transit projects (Rio Grande!).

I agree that I think the stadium is capable of hosting as it is, but I *selfishly* want more seats. I hadn't heard about the possible identical press box on the east, that would be cool!

They certainly could cap the road and build over it, but losing the view of the "UTAH" painted on the field house would upset a lot of fans. When they re-did the roof last summer people went nuts about it and Mark Harlan (AD) had to tweet out that it would be painted again.

Yes! Expanded TRAX! In a semi-related note, I am still hoping that they do TRAX into Utah County through the prison site instead of blasted BRT.

Come to think of it, a great addition to RES for another Olympics would be to redevelop that giant parking lot next to it. Can you imagine a revived Universe Project being the new "Olympic Village"? Post-Olympics, it could be a mixed-use area with student housing, underground parking, and new gameday traditions.

This was killed by the 2008 recession, for the curious.

That would be a great addition! I remember seeing somewhere when reading about the Universe Project that for parking there would be 100 stalls above ground and then 400 stalls underground, which would increase the total number to 500 (there are currently 400, I believe). I am a student at the U and am salty because they took about 40 spaces and made them "Ken Garff Scholarship Club" parking only.

That would be a phenomenal Olympic village.

For the Olympics they could temporarily cover up the UTAH and do a giant (LED?) Olympic logo on the roof of the field house!

That would be a fantastic location for the Olympic Village. Would that be enough housing for all the athletes though?

Traditional rotation of continents?

2018 Asia
2020 Asia
2022 Asia

I hope they have given up that idea and done the smart thing of focusing on cities/countries that are willing and able financially to host. No more Sochis or Rios or Athens. 2030 in Vancouver and 2034 in SLC wouldn't be a problem considering 2032 is in Australia.

I wonder if the state is in discussions with Ivory and the Moda Luxe developers about their proposed 10 floor parking garage on that property.

I can’t imagine the developers would be extremely keen on the west side of their apartment buildings looking directly at a garage. Plus, I don’t know why the state would build something that large anyhow. I feel as though 4-5 floors would be more than sufficient for the employees of the Heber Wells building and liquor store customers and also preserve some sight lines which would help the developers maintain some sort of views for their future tenants.

I took a few pictures around west downtown a few days ago. Not as much as I wanted to do but it gives an update on a couple of projects that haven't been updated in a while.

Work has begun on the project at the SE corner of 100 S 600 W. I don't recall the name of this one, if someone remembers let me know!

The Cinq is coming along. This is the development right next to the Greektown TRAX station.

And some more photos of the Post District for good measure. I love the way it's filling in this area!

There are over 850 parking stalls in the West lot at Rice-Eccles.

The stadium lot is about 6 acres. The previous Oly Village is on approximately 11.5 acres, but only consists of 3-story buildings. Make them 5-6 stories and it seems like it could be enough.

There are about a dozen tunnels. That's just the newest one.

I didn’t know a new tunnel was controversial. That reminds me. The Greek Orthodox development calls for a bridge over 3rd West. I haven’t heard planners clutching their pearls about it. I would think they would considering when CCC was being debated that bridge caused people to flip out.

Pretty easy to see why:
1) Rocky Anderson is not really a thing in city politics now
2) It involves the greeks and not Mormons (see #1, again)
3) 300 W is a state-owned dumpster fire of a street and not main street, so anything is better than what is there

I was wondering if anyone could do me a favor and outline the boundaries of the D-1 zoning in downtown. Would any one have a map, or streets where it is located? Thanks!
