Merci beaucoup

Great video Franks!

One of my favourite views of Quebec City is this one. Everytime I come back from the Mont Sainte-Anne or Charlevoix on road 138, I look forward to this sight (about 40km from downtown).

Also one of my favourite! You can also notice Québec City' skyline much earlier to the east, up the road towards Charlevoix.

True, first one is shortly after you make the turn onto the 5 from Hope. The second one is about 20km north of the old toll station. That second one will be out for a couple of months at least. Rest of the route was just fine.

Coquihalla reopening to all forms of traffic on Wednesday

In a shocking turn of events, the Coquihalla Highway (Hwy 5) will reopen to all traffic starting on Wednesday.

Transportation Minister Rob Fleming made the announcement today and it comes after weeks of monitoring the repaired highway since it reopened to essential traffic on Dec. 20.

“We have had, of course, some weather-related issues with a strong winter of heavy snow events, however, the areas where temporary repairs are in place are functioning well,” Fleming said.

“We are now in a position to safely open the Coquihalla to regular vehicle traffic and that will happen beginning (Wednesday).”

Fleming said the reopening of the much-more-convenient route connecting the Lower Mainland and Interior represents another significant milestone in the province’s recovery from November’s devastating storms.

However, the minister also warned drivers that it is not the same Hwy 5 as we’ve known before the recent storms.

“Some stretches of the Coquihalla are two-lane traffic only with one lane in each direction and multiple speed reductions are in place,” he explained.

“For everyone’s safety, it is imperative that all motorists obey the posted speed limits and do not pass in these sections.”

According to Fleming, the drive between Hope and Merritt will take around 45 minutes longer than usual, so people are urged to be patient and budget that extra time into their travel plans.

He also mentioned that electric vehicle charging stations remain out of service due to storm damage and some rest areas are closed.

Safety also remains a top priority, and there will be increased enforcement from the RCMP and CVSE on this route to ensure motorists are being safe and driving to the conditions.

Hwy 5 has been closed to regular vehicle traffic since Nov. 14, 2021, due to catastrophic damage from the first of three significant storms that hit BC.

It reopened to commercial vehicles and inter-city buses on Dec. 20, well ahead of schedule.

More than 300 workers using 200 pieces of equipment have been working nearly around the clock to fix over 20 significantly damaged sites along the route between Hope and Merritt.

Meetings between the Province and various firms to plan a permanent rebuild of Hwy 5, as well as Hwy 1 and Hwy 8, have been ongoing and work is anticipated to begin in the spring.

Fleming also announced today that the weight restrictions for Hwy 99 between Pemberton and Lillooet will also be lifted on Wednesday, although it's recommended that only experienced winter drivers travel the route.

The final closed stretch of Hwy 1 through the Fraser Canyon, around Jackass Mountain, is expected to reopen before the end of January.

I heard on the radio earlier this week to expect at least an extra 45 min delay than what normal driving usually was between Merritt and Hope.

The expressway between where I live and the next prefecture (Kochi) which also goes through a mountain range was washed out in several spots a few years ago. It took over a year for it to be restored to normal, with many sections being reduced to a single lane in each direction before then, so what has occurred with reopening the Coquihalla so far has been a mirror image of that process.

Plans to expand Hamilton’s Highway 6 move forward
https://www.insauga.com/plans-to-expand-hamiltons-highway-6-move-forward/

According to a press release, the engineering firm, AECOM, has been tasked with devising preliminary designs and studies to prepare for the expansion.

The project will increase the number of lanes from two to four along the nine-kilometre stretch of Highway 6 between the 403 and Upper James.

“Our smart, targeted highway investments, like widening Highway 6 South in Hamilton, will better connect communities, create good-paying jobs and support the needs of a growing population,” said Caroline Mulroney, Minister of Transportation, in the release.

“Four-laning this corridor will improve the movement of people and goods while serving the national, regional and local economies.”

This stretch of Highway six is particularly vital to Hamilton’s John C. Munro International Airport, as it is the most direct route to the 403.

In recent years, the airport has grown into the biggest overnight express cargo airport in Canada and this expansion is intended to improve traffic flow and the movement of goods to and from the airport.

Starting this spring, the Province expects AECOM to consult with Indigenous communities, the City, the airport and local businesses starting this spring. Preliminary design work and studies are expected to wrap up by 2024.

Seems like a fairly good highway project, as they come. That could become a freeway connection to the Erie shore corridor. However, I would like to see some controls on sprawl in the areas surrounding this highway.

The greenbelt protects that whole area, so you won't see any residential units popping up anytime soon. If anything is being built, its warehouses near the Airport (such as Amazon) are all zoned for industrial use.

I don't understand why this is being prioritized, while the bypass of Hwy 6 south of the 401 still sits on the back burner.
