Take a look at how Edmonton has gone from something barely more interesting than Ottawa to having a very picturesque skyline in the last five years because of a handful of new buildings.
Edit: Hamilton is another good example of a dense but boring skyline that has the potential to be very interesting with some of the current proposals.

Edmonton had more height and never had Ottawa's table-top, but yeah, it really upped its game in recent years. That's about to happen in Ottawa, but not at all in the area pictured. It's going to be on what has until recently been a pointless O-Train line (aside from Carleton access) because Canadian cities love to have stupid height limits that do nothing useful (Halifax, Montreal, Ottawa, Vancouver).
Hamilton at least has a few interesting stand out buildings and no tabletop, and the drama of the escarpment, lake, and industry. If not for Parliament Hill and the Chateau, Kelowna would have a better skyline than Ottawa at this point in history. That's pretty pathetic for a city obviously trying to go the DC route and half-assing it in typical Canadian fashion.
