Maybe that furthers point point. Ontario dead ended the new lanes some where because they didn't have any coordination with Manitoba? Let's just wait for each side to make a decision then hahah

This is the latest I can find. They selected a preferred option. All of the options come into the current lanes at the weigh scale. If they're trying to nail down the exact tie-in scenario right now, that's bad planning. They have a functional plan for the Ontario side. It's comes into the weigh scale. The new lane is not 500 yards to the north of the lake.

Yes, I believe the gas station was built prior to the highway being twinned. The current WB lanes are the "old highway". When I was a child, there was a rest/picnic area on the south side of the highway at the adjacent Rat Creek. One year we randomly stopped there and thought it was quite nice. The next year it had all been bulldozed to construct the current EB lanes.

I did the survey...it was very clear based on the number of questions about healthcare and education, that the government's focus is on those issues more than infrastructure or anything else. I was waiting for a general comments box at the end of the survey to say how important it is for infrastructure investment. However there wasn't one and it doesn't appear that I can go back and edit my responses.

I created a map on slope profile of certain Ontario Highways, which touched on the 2-lane section of TCH in Manitoba. See if the slopes are accurate (to the first decimal place).
It’s under the layer “Highway 17 (Western Canada)”. Verifying the slopes of TCH (from Falcon Lake) up to Dryden will be a plus. All slopes have been labelled from east to west.

Driving back to Regina from SW MB was a bit of a chore on Monday with all the snow from the night before.

Question about the interaction between drifting snow and the roadway. On the north/south highways there was a lot of snow drifts on the middle of the highways. I was under the impression that the built-up highway would allow the snow to just drift across but that wasn't the case of Monday. Would planting more shelterbelts along the highway help?

They've been working on it for years but sometimes it is for naught. There is a long, dead shelter belt that was planted maybe 30-odd years ago along the TCH between Portage and Winnipeg (near Elie maybe?). A huge wasted effort.

The young trees need constant care (weed control and water) for their first 5 years to become well established.

35 years ago my brother and I planted a new shelterbelt around the farm to replace the old one. Fast growing willows on the outside then a couple of rows of maples and then the slow growing spruce and pines in the interior. The willows were crucial to protect the slower growing trees. Continuous weed control (via tillage) was required as well.

Can this be done for the entire open stretch of the TCH from Headingly to Macgregor? Doubtful.

The biggest problem area is around Portage where the winds come of the lake. IIRC the tree plantings are 3 rows deep on the north side. Not sure what the length is.

^^^It is, essentially a completely new interchange with significant road works.

About the only thing staying is the Hwy#1 roadbed under the bridge and the bulk of the embankment for the overpass. Even that will be added to to raise the bridge height.
