Conclusion: Most of our teams are meh, so our sports obsession is meh. NFL team is actively hated.

I doubt that. It would be rare for any city not to have the NFL team number one or at least two.
I'm sure it is your personal bias in that post and not reality on the ground.
Otherwise, who goes to the games, who watches them on TV? The NFL team with a valuation of 4.2 Billion dollars and in the top five of all of the teams in the NFL in valuation.
