That's one view, but what about urbanistic delights and feel?

Vaudreuil

Serious answer is probably Granby or Riviere-du-Loup. Cute little downtowns in natural settings. Blainville's old historic centre is nice but not helped by freeways and suburbs surrounding it.

It used to have intoxicated 18 year olds from OttawaU and Carleton at night.

The former Saint-Jean-Baptiste Church (its a museum now) is at least 65m tall to the top of the spire (Google earth). Which means it would be the tallest structure in this city from the time it was built in 1884 to 1924 when the Chateau Frontenac main tower was built.

The national assembly, which was built a couple years after that church is notably much shorter, showcasing the power of the clergy over the state.

In 2020 I went to Ottawa with my gf and I insisted we explore Hull, something I had never done on foot extensively.

It was a cold and depressing experience. I wasn't impressed, let's just say that. I was the one who insisted we go and spend a couple hours to do this, and I was the first one to call it a day and go back to "civilization" across the river. Lol.

I definitly saw the potential in Hull though. It needs less highrises and Mcdevelopments and more small-scale attention in its residential streets.
Hull can be a very charming and desirable place if it wishes to be.

Ottawa on Canada Day. Not sure what year, but it's somewhere within 2014-2019.

Back in the before-times, prior to the pandemic, and before the residential school crisis, when Canada was still proud of itself, and knew it's place in the world.

Now there is nothing but shame, penitence, gloom and quarantine.........

Driving down the Ville Marie Expressway, as you are approaching the tall buildings, suddenly you are underground. That underground expressway really helps one to appreciate Montreal's heft. It is the only big Canadian city with an underground expressway through the downtown core of any significant length. There is even an underground highway interchange. Heck, most large American cities lack underground freeways. Boston being one exception. Tunnels under rivers are not quite the same thing.

Hope we one day get back to that. Canada has had many failures, colonialism and the treatment of the Indigenous peoples at the top of the list, but Canada Day should be about celebrating our successes.

I'm afraid that the current climate of focusing on the bad further divides us.

I really wish Montreal would get rid of that silly 'no building higher than Mont Royal' rule.

Though I'm pro abolishing the height limit on paper, in practice I really don't see the point. Downtown Montreal is one pf the least interesting neighbourhoods in the city I find, and I don't see how a bunch of 230m towers would help that.

Downtown needs better at-grade infrastructure and transit (both are being upgraded at the moment) and points of interest.

Now the gaps are finally being filled though I wouldn't mind having a post-Mont-Royal tower (like 250m max) built on top of the central station garage bunker. It would have to be an iconic tower.

Ultimately, the bulk of Montrealers are indifferent to tall towers at best, at worst they're actively against them.

I quite like where I live in Aylmer. It's nice and quiet.

Damn Ottawa people keep clogging up my streets trying to get cheap beer though.

How so? There are so many interesting areas and neighbourhoods within the downtown area (Chinatown, Koreatown, Old MTL, QdS, hell even Griffintown etc..). There's so much to do downtown, but I want to know why with all that, it's the least interesting area for you?

I do agree though, taller buildings won't do much, it all depends on the ground level and how lively everything is. I sincerely hope post-covid, downtown MTL becomes a true 24/7 place.
