Here's a nice beach in Burlington. I've got a great idea: lets cover it with power pylons!!

I mean, WTF????

1950s
We're going to build a beautiful boulevard. It'll have an amazing tree canopy. We'll call it... "Golden Boulevard"

"Naw, instead of trees Ontario Hydro says this is perfect for a hydro corridor"

"Besides, who gives a ****, this is the East side of Welland. The property values will never be high in this industrial town"

It is a real shame. Hopefully one day the lines can be buried or run along the lake bottom.

But they could have gone along this route through Hamilton into Burlington instead, which would have been worse.

I made photothread about this a couple of years ago, maybe you will remember: The North American Moscow. It actually got more response than any other thread I've made, I was surprised, so maybe there is both good and bad, not just bad.

And maybe it is hard to deny Mississauga is one of the leaders in this category also. It was the neighbourhood where I spent most of my childhood and youth so there is personal connection, you can see my former apartment building, so not just a reaction to this thread or anything like that.

As cold as these environments may seem, you can't deny the warmth of the people, right?

Vasily sighed. A deep drag on the cigarette on the gray, cold January morning.

He looked up. He stood at the coner of Glocester and Bronson. The towers at least reminded him of home, he thought glibly.

His comrades had got the — assignments. Washington, London, sunny Madrid. His superiors at the KGB had promised him the same, until the comment about doddering Brezhnev had slipped out after a couple of drinks. Then, they had handed him his assignment.

Ottawa. Moskva on the Rideau, sans Red Square.

The wind cut into him. Another drag.

lol, this is probably more Moscow on the Cooksville (Creek). The Moscow on the Credit might be Port Credit. Kind of unique place, isn't it? Commie blocks by both a river and the lake. Maybe I could do a Port Credit thread one day but I would go there during the summer. Some SSPers want to see what the North American Moscow is like during the summer and maybe that is the perfect place to show them.

I love this

it's even funnier because I have a friend, Marina that lives in Moscow and the family pet is a chinchilla named Vasily!

He looked wistfully across the ice-covered Ottawa River, towards Île de Hull. Beyond the fog emanating from the rooftops of the cold, functionalist and faceless buildings warehousing the proletariat civil service, he could spy the bones of the formerly wanton district. Vasily made a mental note that on one lonely night, he would trek down Eddy Street in search of libations and brothels. "At least those Quebecoises are warm...though a poor substitute for the expert ministrations of Natasha and Olga"

Let's give Moscow some credit, it's nowhere near as depressing as Ottawa.

People who use the epithet "Moscow-on-the-*" has obviously never visited Moscow in the past 20 years. The neighbourhoods in Central Moscow especially around Red Square is absolutely gorgeous and blows away anything we have in Canada, let alone Ottawa.

Ha. Fair. Even their skyline game is pretty good... I see Shanghai skyline pics on social media all the time but seldom Moscow even though it's among the best in Europe...

My apologies for not using a multitude of emojis to indicate I was not in fact making light of Moscow.

Nor of Moscow.

Source

Turns out there are 25 places with that name that are not in Russia, at least those that have been Wiki-fied.

Hence why I set Vasily’s story in the late 1970s or early 1980s.

Moscow has changed a lot since then.

—-

Despite the setback, Vasily had been somewhat interested to go, if just to see the so-called ‘free world’. His unaccented English was excellent, his French so-so, but passable.

His introduction to the free world’s automotive landscape had not gone well. A Dodge Aspen had been arranged for him. Such a hateful automobile. The air cleaner and car body sported the many dents of his unbridled rage at the Chrysler Corporation. It gave him ample practice of his English (and rather confusing French Canadian) profanity. He had to work not to slip back into Russian when under its hood. Nor did this vehicle respond to his bashing the same way his Lada had. When fear of wrench was put into Lada, it worked. When wrench was put to Dodge, bits broke off in rusty chunks. Capitalism, bah, he thought. If this was what capitalism produced, they could have it.

His superiors had given him marching orders: Get into the highest role possible at External Affairs and get the inside line on the government’s foreign policy. What he had observed had appalled him. He had expected a similar version of Switzerland or West Germany’s foreign affairs departments: A crew of competent diplomats with an eye to realpolitik. Reality had proved somewhat more disappointing. The Peter Principle run amok, and they drank swill called ‘coffee’ that had reminded him of the black stuff they had served him during his mandatory military service.
