I respectfully disagree. Whereas Calgary often looks relatively urban and dense in skyline pictures I think the parking lots here make it look like it could be in Texas or Florida.

Most of these are along 9th ave where the train tracks separate downtown from the beltline. The parking in the middle right is actually the top level of a parkade over the tracks also.

Most North American downtowns have ample (or, way too much) surface parking. You could just as easily say Calgary looks like Winnipeg here, if the parking lots are literally the only thing you're homing in on.

I think it's the mix of new glassy buildings with parking lots that makes me think Texas more than Winnipeg. Here it's mostly commmie block towers and surface parking or old industrial buildings from the 20s and surface parking. Usually I find pictres of Calgary quite nice as there's a few buildings that I think look great but this one isn't doin it for me

Yes it looks like surface parking from that angle. Still this is not anything to brag about...

That section along the CPR tracks (along 9th and 10th aves) is still a scar on the skyline. Hopefully more development occurs, though the Marriott and those new condos U/C in that pic will help. The north downtown side is even worse.

That is a unique angle of Edmonton's skyline and makes it look super beefy.

I've always thought that it might be the best angle for it captures Downtown and Oliver.

I also like that Edmonton isn't overloaded with twin, triplet and quadruplet towers like Calgary is.
