So do I. It would have been nice if citizen engagement was part of the process.

That said, losing proposals sometimes re-surface on the websites of those companies, architects in particular. So one day we might see one of them, or maybe both.

Let's hope that those are space holders and not actual designs of the towers. It's giving me red-brick tower on top of a slightly different Ottawa Central Library (aka cement bunker) vibes

For sure. I thought that was the library at first, but the perspective was off since the library is much farther away.



No doubt this is just general massing. I'm confident the final design will be above average for Ottawa.

I'm curious as to who the "community bike shop" is going to be. Would one of the existing community shops move there, or is the City planning to run its own?

Just speculating, but the Ottawa Bicycle Club is right nearby on Booth. Could be something involving them.

From my understanding it isn't a traditional "bike shop" but a place that you can go to fix your own bike. They provide the tools you need to do the work. There may also be volunteers there who can provide advice. I am not sure if they will have any parts available for sale or if you need to get those elsewhere.

That was my interpretation as well based on the presentation. Kind of a bummer. It would have been nice to have full bike repair and cleaning services, along with selling some parts and lending the tools for diy jobs. Don't even need to actually sell bikes.

But they're just a cycling club, not a shop in the sense of repairs etc.

I know what a community bike shop is, because I manage the re-Cycles shop here in Ottawa.

Interesting that the folks from Zibi are involved in this project. They do like the idea of a community bike shop, because they originally approached us about possibly relocating to Zibi. That ended up not happening, and we moved ourselves over to Catherine St. instead.

It's possible that the candidate could be our former shop-partners Cycle Salvation. They're still in our old location on Bronson, and were originally going to move out last Fall. (They're still there but I haven't chatted with them recently to find out why.)

community shops will teach you how to repair your own bike, provide all the tools and materials except parts. They'll also have a parts bin with used stuff. Its quite handy, I went into recycles to put a bike together and the bottom bracket I brought with me was broken. They had a bin of old brackets so I was still able to put everything together. Re-cycles specifically also refurbishes and sells bikes, or scrap them for parts in the shop.
The uOttawa bicycle co-op would let you order parts to the shop from the dealer catalog at a solid discount from retail.

All in all, the services that it will offer will be heavily dependent on the personnel running it.

It's a bit sad that so many affordable housing buildings employ the same visual cues and usage of colour to attempt to distract you from the banality of their design.

I like the podiums a lot and the angular top of the buildings. the tower itself is giving me office towers built in the 70s
