What a tone deaf response the mayor just gave. "I walk downtown all the time and I feel safe."

They too have a significant proportion with mental health issues and/or addicted. The legacy of Residential Schools and enforced foster care are significant factors in the levels of abuse experienced by people who attended those institutions, and their children (as many of their their parents had no experience of positive parenting to emulate).

Finding one example of someone carrying out a random attack who isn't indigenous doesn't make your point. Nobody said 100% of street crime is carried out by indigenous people. (Or by people from the DTES - although you seem to think that's the case). Indeed, unless there are images, like this, you wouldn't even be able to tell if they were indigenous, as these days press reports generally don't draw attention to that aspect of people involved in crime, unless it's because the police are actively seeking someone for who that detail is important.

I don't know if the attacker you identified is 'crazed from substance abuse'. He could be suffering from a psychosis, which may be drug-related or may be from schizophrenia or some other brain illness or injury. Obviously some people who act like this are on drugs - but not all of them. That's why VPD have a dedicated mental health car (Car 87) to deal with situations like this - although it isn't always deployed when it's needed.

He might also have been drunk. That was apparently the case with the man acting violently who was shot and killed by the VPD last year. His was one of four 'police involved deaths' last year. (The pictures of him suggested he might be indigenous - but he was apparently Filipino - see comment below).
Hence, getting back to earlier discussions, it is a lot more than residential schools that is causing dysfunctionality in our society. It can almost be described as racist when only residential school is harped upon, and at the same time other factors are totally ignored.

And, stop defending criminals for their acts of violence. No matter what, this situation is getting out of hand as the downtown situation is getting much worse. We don't need any more enablers or sympathizers. Drug-crazed or not, perpetrators should be severely punished for commiting such a heinous violent act, full stop.

I haven't ever defended any criminal behaviour. I have tried to point out to you that we live in a grey world - it's not as simple as you seem to believe. If you'd ever worked with people in a mental institution, or had a friend who was bi-polar, or a colleague who developed schizophrenia you might have a more nuanced understanding.

But there's no evidence you have any interest in understanding the reasons that some people act in an anti-social or aggressive manner without them being high on illicit drugs.

And to be clear, Mezzanine said "there are many reasons for public disorder" and suggested one of them is the legacy from residential schools, and I agree and offered several others.

The former Vancouver civic politician known as "Tom Terrific" has died.

Tom Campbell was mayor from 1967 to 1972, overseeing some large-scale developments in the city, including Pacific Centre and Two Bentall Centre.

He was 84 years old.

Vancouver mayor Gregor Robertson issued a statement today noting that he also played a key role in the purchase of the south shore of False Creek for a housing development. During Campbell's reign, the Bloedel Conservativory, Centennial Museum, and H.R. MacMillan Planetarium were built.

"We extend our sincere condolences to his family and loved ones," Robertson said.

Campbell, a real-estate developer, was elected to city council in 1962. He built some of the first high-rises in the West End, as well as the familiar large, green apartment building on the south side of the Burrard Street Bridge....

Well, he feels safe until he goes to the liquor store and is confronted by someone daring to verbally berate him for the lousy job he's doing. Then he calls the cops PDQ.

I had a moment to search, if we're talking about the same article / quote:

The paraphrase: ""I walk downtown all the time and I feel safe.""

The quote: ""I do think Vancouver is safe, it's one of the safest cities in the world."

Was this the quote you are referring to? I imagine Global and CTV released the same quote from the same interview.

I don't think because he's simply an elected official with limited power means we let Harassment slide.

No. Same interview, but the soundbite I heard was not quoted in the write-ups nor the video that CTV posted.

Like I get you can't shame them because technically it's not incorrect and doing so will absolutely impact your PR department but it's still vandalism. It's not even good looking vandalism like a vinyl wrap or another sign screwed over the sign. It's rattlecanned across it like what you would find anywhere else.
Update. Aware that calling out the vandalism would like be interpreted as "anti-indigenous sentiment" and replacing the sign again would likely just see it vandalized again, they removed the sign entirely.

Listen, I get it. There are people today and going back over 100 years who treated you with no level of respect and only now are we beginning to recognize what happened, how awful it is and that continuing that mindset is socially unacceptable and as a Canadian with no indigenous background that's a hot take, but it doesn't give you the right to vandalize and deface objects that you see as not aligning to what you believe. Even if it was a cheeky joke you had to s**t on everyone's fun because the world didn't revolve around you.

Citizens giving their honest opinion to elected officials is harassment now? No wonder they're trying to minimize public hearings.

There are better forums to share your honest opinion then in a store when said official is shopping with his wife. And if you must share your opinion at an inopportune time, say your piece and leave the man alone. Don't follow him around the store, don't insult his wife, and certainly don't make physical contact.

I'm guessing you're also upset about moderated comments and the right to refuse service?

Caught-on-camera stabbing at Vancouver Tim Hortons sends man to hospital with serious injuries

"This disturbing incident has all the hallmarks of a random attack that came completely without warning, and we’re increasingly worried about the public’s safety," Sgt. Steve Addison said in a news release.

Police are hoping witnesses of the incident, which happened at about 6:20 a.m. at the Harbour Centre Tim Hortons on West Hastings Street, will help identify the suspect.
