There's going to be a Vietnam Airlines repat flight this week. The flight will be using the Boeing 787 and both flights will route through Tokyo Narita airport.

VN 8 ETA will be 07:00 on Jan 6th

VN 9 ETD will be 17:00 on Jan 7th.

According to what I read just now in Wikipedia, and in an announcement on Twitter ((which can easily be translated with google)), Turkish Airlines is starting a 4x / week service to Seattle, March 9 / 2022.
Although they do not yet have direct flights to India, all being snarled and delayed by the pandemic, they have planned direct flights from Seattle to Bangalore on AA, and year-round to Munich,
as the approaching service start for Vancouver. And they already have both Qatar and Emirates, for the better or not.

All this is perhaps normal, as the Seattle metro is now at 4 million, almost as big as Montreal.
But it's Seattle being the corporate and tech powerhouse it has become, and obviously a larger market.

The only domain that seems to belong to Vancouver is Australia / NZ, and that seems more tourist/family Y class than J class, though I understand J class represents a percentage of tickets sold. As for first class? Well, it's always a possibility... Hey, I'm rooting for my hometown, be sure, but as far as competition from Seattle, the heat seems on.
And as a final remark, on a tangent, I sincerely believe that tight, Canadian over-regulation plays a part.

And a brief but comprehensive article by Glen Korstrom at BIV, dated, ((January 2020)) but still relevant, I think.

Actually the flight on AC to Australia is one of the hardest to get an upgrade on. So I think they do a good job of selling the J cabin. AC also operates a 777-200LR on that route, that aircraft is business class heavy vrs the alternatives that would be a 787. That is likely good evidence that it does well in the front cabin.

Not certain the middle east airlines are going to be that important longer term. With direct flights to India its not clear what market they are serving that is not already served.

Yeah, the plum blossom on the tail is a dead giveaway. The plum blossom is the national flower of Taiwan. It's Taiwan's equivalent to Japan's Chrysanthemum or cherry blossom or China's peony (Although China and Japan don't have "official" national flowers).

It's even the symbol used on Taiwan's Olympic team flag.

Yeah, they know non-business travellers are willing to shell out a bit of extra cash for such a long flight to Australia.

^ I agree that was a tough flight to get an upgrade on.
Was much easier about 8 years ago. But the last few times trying to fly AC YVR-SYD it was impossible. Who knows now as business travel will take quite awhile to recover.

Also agree with direct flights to DEL on both AC and AI plus with TK now flying out of YVR Emirates is less relevant.

Still amazes me right now everytime I filter YVR on FR 24 the vast array of heavy metal on so many different carriers and aircraft types dazzles me.

Also starting tomorrow LH 493 to FRA switches to a 359 for awhile… then back to a 343… then back to a 744 in March. So rare to see 744s anymore!

AF will be going on a short hiatus for awhile

YVR still doing very well for long haul international through the slower season along with the ongoing pandemic effect.

Yes Vancouver YVR does well for Long Haul International flights ✈️ every year to Asia & Europe & their only competition on International flight routes is Calgary YYC in Western Canada - which Vancouver loses some passengers to and along with competition with US Pacific Western major Airports like Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles etc.

It not just Vancouver that see cuts on International flights to Europe during a slower season between January- March, as Air Canada & WestJet usually makes some cuts to Calgary- London UK routing every year these 3 months & I'm not surprised that Air France decided to take haitus/ pause on the Vancouver- Paris route too.

In addition, appears that YVR-HKG is one of the very few routes CX is currently operating.
So this month the following long-haul intl carriers are continuing to operate:
BA AF LH KL TK
AI QF SQ KE JL NH CX CA 3U MF PR BR CI
And the carriers operating cargo only on pax aircraft such as NZ JD CZ MU haven’t seen HU operating for awhile now
Am I missing any?

I’m still impressed YVR has gained AI SQ and QF

I think YYC has KL only

Yep currently KLM is the only foreign airline ✈️ operating at Calgary YYC,Western Canada's 2nd busiest airport after Vancouver YVR.

Yes alot of the International flights last several years at YYC has been operated by Air Canada,WestJet & KLM mostly!

This upcoming Spring/Summer 2022 starting in mid May,Eurowings Discover a Leisurely Airline which is part of the Lufthansa group will be operating (seasonally) between YYC & Frankfurt Germany on Airbus A330. Lufthansa used to operate to YYC in the past & will see how it goes this time around.

There is also Condor/ Edelweiss Air operating (seasonal) flights during Summers between YYC & Europe and that's about it.

Yeah surprise!
Pretty soon there won’t be any routes left.
Cases exploding globally - just a matter of time

I come here (the YVR thread) to read updates about YVR, not other Canadian airports.

With the way that some posters are glorifying their own airports, I would've thought that YVR slipped to 5th or 6th place nationally.

Not 5th or 6th, but they did slip to 3rd, as far as international pax numbers are concerned.

And it’s all because of lack of passengers to Asia (mostly China).

It doesn’t matter how many foreign airlines a certain poster up above mentions, those numbers aren’t translating to international bums in seats.

Consider yourself updated.

I think we are nearing the point where COVID becomes endemic. If omicron is not last wave it will be the second last wave that causes significant lockdown. End result is in about 4-6 months we should begin to open back up.

The airlines that are flying once or twice a week to Vancouver will begin ramping back up. The cruise ships will be back in April. Lives will begin returning to normal.

YVR should be back to planning airport expansions.

They also need to work of securing some of the temporary visitors they had during the pandemic. The logical transit airport for the Tahiti flights is obviously Vancouver. Perhaps work on convincing the Australian and New Zealand airlines that Vancouver makes sense as a transit airport for flights to Heathrow or New York.

I guess I wasn't hyperbolic enough, I should have mentioned that I thought YVR is now out of the top 10 from the way some posters are insinuating.

It wasn't that long ago when YVR was third in total international passengers (2012?), and it won't come as a shock to anyone when YVR regains second place once the pandemic fully recovers.

Thanks @Johnny Aussie for providing actually useful and relevant info related to YVR. To reiterate, if I wanted to find out how other airports are doing relative to YVR, I would visit the Canadian Airport Thread in the Canada forum.

You’re too kind.
Yeah despite the negativity of some posters, the naivety of some posters and the sheer ignorance of some posters… this is a thread about YVR.
YVR is still clearly the second busiest airport in Canada full stop.
The number of airlines operating out of YVR despite all the shite going on still blows me away. The only airport in Western Canada with any sort of significant list of international carriers.
Just look at FR24 on any given day and you’ll see the variety I’m talking about.
But, sigh, certain posters will always chime in anyway.
Very little to glorify in other airports at the moment anyway really! Unless of course you consider plenty of flights to Mexico and other sun destinations as noteworthy (which YVR has plenty of anyway)
Calfan is a bit annoying. Post something about YVR and he will somehow chime in about YYC in the YVR thread? One foreign carrier operating there at the moment. Pretty boring but adds NIL value to the YVR thread. He does that in the YEG thread too.
And that fly zone person - yeah well we all know about him. And trofirhen too… fixated on the same thing for years and years yet…
I only have to read what they say when somebody quotes them… so thanks a lot! Haha!
Plenty of newsworthy stuff going on at YVR.
Nothing is normal anywhere atm so comparisons are pretty useless anyway right now.
I’ll say it again… impressed YVR has gained Turkish, Air India and Singapore last year… never would have thought that five years ago. Future will be good.
