New Penn Station Plaza Will Open Up Busy Midtown Street
A formerly traffic-clogged street next to Penn Station will soon become a pedestrian plaza lined with trees and tables and chairs.

Quote:
A formerly traffic-clogged street next to Penn Station will soon be filled with trees, tables and chairs, and public programming as the city begins work on a new pedestrian plaza.

The plaza will run along West 33rd Street between Seventh and Eighth avenues. It will be built jointly by the Department of Transportation and the real estate company Vornado, who presented the project's design to Community Board 5 on Monday.

The project coincides with the expansion of the Long Island Rail Road concourse at Penn Station, which is happening beneath 33rd Street and will be completed in 2023. Work on the new plaza will begin in January 2023 and take about a year, Vornado representative Judy Kessler told the board.

Once complete, the block-long plaza will be lined with circular tree pits, paved with granite stones and decked out with metal tables, chairs and trash cans. The sidewalk will be extended further into Seventh Avenue, and mounted lighting will be installed on adjacent buildings.

Formerly open to car traffic, 33rd Street was closed in 2015 to become a temporary plaza. In recent months, it has been largely off-limits due to the LIRR work happening underground.

Plans for 33rd Street also coincide with Vornado's renovations of its adjacent office buildings at 1 and 2 Pennsylvania Plaza — slated for completion in mid-2022 and 2023, respectively.

This whole Empire Station plan should've included the demo of 2 Penn Plaza and the Theatre at MSG.

That alone would've opened up Penn Station to the East and West of MSG.

Deal would've been contingent on that happening.. Vornado would've had to basically give up 2 Penn to build the other 4-5 towers they plan on building. Could've even transferred the air rights from 2 Penn to one or all those towers.

While they're at it.. 1 Penn should be on the chopping block too!

The plan before the current reno of 2 Penn was to tear it down, and build a large tower along with new grand entrances to Penn. No funding assistance from the government was coming, so that plan was scrapped in favor of the renovation.

And some images of today's meeting on historic eligibility of the Penn Staion block (the station, MSG, and the office buildings).

Interesting the way it's framed. When you start talking about historic, it goes beyond just how something looks. These two buildings (MSG, 2 Penn), which are very much unliked, could also from a preservationists standpoint be considered worth saving. That just shows that just because something may seem worth saving doesn't necessarily mean that it is. Something to think about.

More of Moynihan is opening up, and it’s starting to look like the renderings…

Opening soon….

A few months late, but the pandemic did slow things down.

I always thought those renderings to be on the generic side. But apparently not. I’m excited to see the building further opening (along with Manhattan West), bringing more life to that stretch of the west side. Especially when you look at the current construction mess at Penn proper. Two different worlds. The people who continue to wait for Amtrak on the other side, with all of its problems, have no idea how different things are at Moynihan.

The Buffalo Chronicle Is Not A Reliable News Outlet

Which makes sense. There is no byline. No other media reporting on what would be an absolutely nuclear blast of a news story. And then there's the fact that Dewitt Clinton Park would make a pretty lousy location for a relocated MSG. Plus it's a park. Can you imagine the nimby save the park outcry?

I think there may be some actually good intentioned trolling on the part of the "Buffalo Chronicle" as they clearly are messaging for and advocating for the more ambitious route of moving MSG in order to build a proper train station worthy of the city (and country). In that regard, I agree, and applaud them for their lighthearted onion style fake news.

Great.

As for the Hochul thing, one thing people would fight is the taking if any park space.

Quote:
Many of the studio spaces will include in-studio audiences and others will overlook the Hudson River. Hochul believes that national programing will help improve the city’s image, believing that New York City’s waterfront has gone under-appreciated in the national consciousness.
Lol.
