I agree

I’ve always thought NHL is the most realistic. We have an arena where they can play already...I think. Maybe some remodeling needs to be done to fit an ice rink but it’s there to remodel.. NHL also seems to embrace smaller metros than even Salt Lake -Columbus, Winnipeg, Ottawa. And the NHL seems to be more actively expanding. Low investment with a stadium already in place, and a better professional sport for smaller markets. NHL is what should be our target.

I agree NHL is the next natural fit. I would want a strong farm team to remain in the Salt Lake market also.

Don't sleep on Weber/Davis Counties in the future either. Ogden has a lot of fallow land in its metro and has flown under the radar compared to Provo until recently. I think we see more growth northward in the coming decades than we have previously, keeping SLC near the center-of-mass of the Wasatch Front.

We really haven't been paying enough attention to all of the growth happening in the Northern Metro. It seems like the Standard Examiner posts more development stories than the Salt Lake papers, we just would have to pay to subscribe to it. Though, BuildingSaltLake is one of the best development resources in the country. Thank goodness we have that and Blah_Amazing. Haha, They keep our enthusiasm going.

It's more likely to go to where they can get a significant amount land. Look at the Braves new stadium in Atlanta or Bucks in Milwaukee, even the proposed Coyotes deal in Tempe. They're all looking for stadiums with surrounding "entertainment districts" which they can build out. That additional development is critical to stadium financing these days with no direct public subsidies being provided. In my opinion, any new stadium is going to want a big chunk of land that they can co-develop with shopping, apartments, possibly office space.

It hasn’t been mentioned yet, but Salt Lake is now in the top 4 shortlist to host the 2024 RNC. That is pretty impressive for a city our size and goes to show how Salt Lake has been working hard to punch above our weight.

Will we get it?…..Probably not. It’s still possible, but because we are not a ‘battleground state’ it would be a shift from how the event has been hosted in the recent past. But it does reflect Salt Lake’s growing ability to successfully bid for big events.

One of the most important factors for Ryan Smith and his ownership group is the overall brand of Salt Lake City and the state. He is interested in making the image of SLC be much more urban, modern and approachable for outsiders. You can always be surprised, but I really dont see him bringing a major league team into the state and putting them into the burbs. I think he would see the opportunity and branding value of the team is way too valuable to locate it outside of the city.

Atlas- I don’t disagree that Utah has great local support. I mentioned in my previous post that the Jazz have great fans. I just don’t see all the out of Staters who are moving here bolstering the population jump ranks and become a Utah pro football team fan. Would there be tons of locals who go to the NFL game? Absolutely. Would out of Staters who are adding to the growing population become fans. I think this is far from certain. This is why despite there being let’s say a couple million Chargers fans in the greater LA area half the stadium fills up with Broncos fans who travel/are living in the area. The NFL is different from college football when it comes to who goes to the game. Even at Broncos-Steelers or Broncos-Packers games that are in Denver there are plenty of Steelers or Packers fans. This is all beside the point though.. I don’t disagree that an NFL stadium could sell out in Salt Lake assuming consistency. That part is difficult. My overarching point is it’s not about what we want, it’s about what the leagues think is a good investment. Vegas beats out Salt Lake for baseball in my opinion given its reputation, and success with the Knights and Raiders. Would I prefer an MLB (the A’s) relocate in Salt Lake. Hell Yes!!!!! Of course. Just trying not to be biased. We all want professional sports teams here in SLC, I’d be crazy not to.

I’ve always thought NHL is the most realistic. We have an arena where they can play already...I think. Maybe some remodeling needs to be done to fit an ice rink but it’s there to remodel.. You'd be surprised at how many local fans have grown up cheering for a specific team and consider themselves pretty diehard fans. I am not sure that fandom just evaporates because now Salt Lake has a NFL team. So, I think you're right that there would be a sizable segment of the population who wouldn't be fans of the local team. That type of fandom can take decades to build and frankly, as I said in another post, that just isn't a viable option for Utah at this point.

Why?

Because, unless the market gets an actual winner to relocate here, it's going to be the toughest market to get talent to. Then you run into a situation where the franchise struggles and no one cares.

Look at Jacksonville, which came in the league the same time as Charlotte. Jacksonville actually saw initial success, making the AFC Championship in 1996 (their second year in the league) but the franchise, at least in the 21st Century, has been one of the worst-performing franchises in the league.

Since 2000, they've made the playoffs three-times. They have 17 losing seasons in 22 years and have won three games total the last two seasons.

The Jaguars are constantly being floated around as a team looking to relocate because Jacksonville is not working for them - they don't have the fan support.

I think that's exactly what could face Salt Lake with a NFL team, especially with how difficult it is to get talent to want to come play in Utah. Add the fact you've got a lot of fans who've grown up cheering for Denver or the Niners or the Chiefs and the lack of instant success, and an ability to build a fan base of its own, probably dooms it too.

The best bet is, as you said, the NHL because it's a smaller league very similar to the NBA in the 1970s.

But it's just a pipedream to expect Salt Lake to get a NFL team. Not at this point in time.

Nice try delts to steer the conversation back towards the hundreds of projects that are acrually being built or approved. But it looks like were stuck for a few more pages of pontificating and conjecture. For those of us not living there, the cam at the top of the Wells Fargo building has become our only hope of catching very grainy pics of whats happening. And only if its pointing at something of interest. (Sigh).

And now, back to our regularly scheduled programming...

(And before yall pile on me for my audacity, this was written with tongue firmly planted in cheek. You know; sarcasim.)

I think they have a groundbreaking ceremony tomorrow afternoon. That would signal to me that mass excavation is right around the corner.

While this photo by Kier was taken a little while ago they just posted it this month. What attracted me to the photo was how it indicates the boom of new multi-unit construction in Salt Lake City. Looks like Kier is just starting work on
Central West, Bookbinder and Colony B. I posted the updated January pics over on the Compilation Thread.

While the amount of new build is very impressive I have to agree that they need to do some switching up with the color schemes. Enough of the brown/white/gray combos. It's time to start inserting some of the 'Dixon Place and
Broadway Park Loft's coloring and style into the mix' of downtown mid-rises.

Astra Tower "Groundbreaking"

Just heard on the news this morning that Astra Tower is having its "groundbreaking" today which is kinda funny since its been under construction for several months.

I also noticed yesterday a huge tall machine on the tower site, I think its a pile driver.

So I guess those will be the official groundbreaking pics with suits and shovels etc. We haven't had any pics of Brinshore across the street for a while. How is that progressing?

Also, there's your update photo of the Brinshore development in the lower right corner of that photo.

Oh, and the other two developments beyond that, you can see the cleared site for Moda Luxe, and just beyond that you can see the cleared site for The Worthington tower.

Updates for 8 projects actually: Astra, 95 State, Liberty Sky, Brinshore, Moda Luxe, Worthington, Cottonwood Broadway, and The Birdie

Is there a city ordinance requiring the light up crowns that we are seeing on these new developments, or just a trend that all of the developers are in on?

I think it’s just a trend. Lighting is high impact/low cost design element.
