He’s not talking about downtown, he’s referring to the project in Transcona that was pointed out in basketballgeek’s post above.

514 Wellington Cres subdivision and rezoning is set to go before City Centre Community Committee on Jan 11. The application documents have some great renderings.

Still a shame we lost that house... The renders are alright. They just remind me of the 'penis house' on Wellington... lol

It really is a shame that the old home is gone. You'd figure someone would have liked the prestige of living in a beautiful old home that you'd have to be very rich to afford in a bigger Canadian city. It was so far gone that I don't think it was really reasonable to expect someone to salvage it, though.

The renders for the new project are meh. I don't think I've ever seen a Prairie Architects project that looked better than the renderings.

As for that other house on Wellington, man, it been on the market for a while now. I guess no one with $8.5 million to spend on a house in Winnipeg wants to buy someone else's place when they could just build to their own specs.

It wasn't so far gone. It remained in nearly perfect condition up until the year before it was demo'd. Prior to it's demo I had read thru it's most recent inspection report and looked thru several photos.

It really was a shame - it was one of the few houses of that size and vintage that had remained single family it's entire existence, without any major detrimental renovations. It was one of a kind.

The garage also had a "turn table" floor meaning you could drive in forwards, and the floor would turn your car around such that you drive back out without having to reverse. That particular feature I believe wasn't functional anymore, but could have been restored.

If that's the case then I stand corrected. Driving by it, it had kind of a dilapidated look near the end which made me think it was in rough shape throughout.

Like I said, I'm surprised someone didn't buy the house to live in. For not wildly more than the price of a new luxury suburban home, you could have had a truly showstopping landmark home that would cost well into the seven figures in a place like Toronto.

I meant "great" in more of the sense that all of the detailed renderings are available, but I think it looks good too. The style and scale fits the area.

And agreed, it would've been great to have the old house redone, but better something new than another old house sitting vacant for years on end.

Good catch! That's a nice little project that helps create a bit more of a transition between the university campus and the SFHs of the West End.

Although that said, the way the fieldhouse already looms over Young St, having another taller building directly across the street will create one of the narrower canyons in Winnipeg...

They all seem like prime places to develop. I assume that 2015 wasn't some unusual massacre year for Winnipeg housing stock, and mostly reflects the update interval for Google's imagery.

I dislike giant surface parking lots as much as the next guy, but I at least understand they're income-generating assets and this can incentivize owners to resist development. But what drives someone to sit on brownfield for half a decade when there's clearly a drive elsewhere in the area to put up new apartment buildings?
In addition, there's a vacant lot on my street (406 Wardlaw), and a building right next to it that has had for sale signs up for years (412 Wardlaw). Don't know what the zoning is for 406 but 412 is RMF-M.

I don't mind the Prairie design. It's fake old but has good materials and proportions. That was probably the best way to get any kind of buy-in from local residents. At least it's not a hardie board special.

the Hugo at McMillan project on the other hand....a fake old streetscape with acrylic stucco pretending to be brick and hardie board pretending to be tyndall stone....with an oversized cartoon stucco cornice.....I'm definitely worried about this one...especially considering the construction details on other projects like the one on River.

Ironclad strikes again with a massive development on Templeton/Pipeline approved for construction and slated to begin later this year. It's a 304 unit development with three 6 storey buildings. Northwest Winnipeg is experiencing unbelievable growth at the moment it might be the hottest area of the city.

Amber Corners (Cartesian Gate)

my god, that's an ugly building. is it a law that every cheap hardiboard building has to have some bright coloured fins to pretend that there's Actual Design involved?

Yes. It's in the hardie board user manual.
