Love how The Grand and that area is shaping up to be. I’m getting LA Live vibes from the restaurant at the Disney Hall and how imposing The Grand is at that corner which kind of gives me Oceanside vibes since it’s still under construction.

Driving down Figueroa the other day having Brookfield and Mitsu make a huge difference to how enclosed Figueroa continuously feels now. It basically completes Figueroa as a Canyon through downtown LA.

Thanks CaliNative. I got a couple of pics in of SoFi Stadium on one of those rainy nights.

That video at the 84 Olympics was awesome. The George Gershwin Rhapsody In Blue composition imo is one of the best ever made.

One of the Regional Connector stations on Hope Street is really starting to take shape. The bridge crossing Hope Street was a great idea.

Missed opportunity on 3rd and Figueroa on what could have been the LA Grand Hotel Tower. With The Grand and the Regional Connector, the area will be bustling in the next few years.

Actually 3 restaurants. His Bazaar concept as a leased space in the Retail portion of the Grand complex and 2 new concepts in the two Conrad hotel restaurants.

Wow!! Great news on The Grand landing Jose Andres and The Bazaar (meat). It is really shaping up to be a major transformative force for downtown’s bunker hill. The scale and design, while understated is fitting in quite well with the other institutions. The city planning commission and county got this one right and it seems like it will be worth the 10+ year delay. Bravo and l look forward to this major opening this year.

A look back on the rollercoaster that was this project…

A 2007 plan had a bit taller of a building at 56 stories and a Mandarin Oriental Hotel. Also the base of the project wasn’t as developed. The first is a picture from an article when most of us on here were devastated because Related ditched this Frank Gehry proposal for Robert AM Stern... and there it is... the 2008 proposal from RAMSA... not their best work considering what is currently posted on the LA Metro page today.

Then; after public outcry and County officials demands, Related brought Gehry back and he must have been pissed that he was kicked off and came back with this

The first Gehry was more cartoonish and gimmicky, then the Grand went to a stoic yet boring design. The current design lands somewhere between all of them and I think what we have is the best of all. This has been a complicated project with all of the stakeholders involved. It’s a project on County owned land in a city specific design area leased to a private developer with stipulations that said developer must include XYZ in the project and also redevelop the County owned “Grand Park.” With all of the stipulations adding to Related’s costs, they probably saw the 1st Gehry as too flashy and eating into their bottom line. It has been something to witness this project’s progression (and regression ).

By the way, one of my favorite websites is Urbanize LA... The writers from UrbanizeLA must be watching these threads as their posts seem to mysteriously align with updates that we generate here... We see you Urbanize, keep doing what you are doing... and if you wanna hire someone... I may be available

^ good reviewing those images after all these yrs....for some reason I thought the earlier concepts by Gehry were better than they were. I do recall always not liking the intermediate ones, when they replaced him with stern...or gensler?

I agree with you....I think the final version is a good blend of the others....some have been disappointed with the final results...they've complained about the color, the painted concrete, etc....but I think it turned out fine. I'm even less likely to nitpick when projs like Oceanwide remain a rusting skeleton or when the apt tower proposed for 4th & Hill remains the shuttered Taco house #1 stand instead of a new bldg.

btw, I believe the owner of urbanizela used to post in this thread.

The owner of Urbanize LA used to post here quite regularly. Skyscraperpage is a major resource for a lot of sites.

I think The Grand turned out fine. Not great, just fine. It could have benefited immensely from having the base clad in stone instead of pre-cast concrete, but overall the massing is interesting and vertical and the base design invites pedestrian flow into and through the complex (down to Olive) somewhat well. Can't wait for it to open up and see it in person up close.

^ No, the Mitsui tower you see pictured here is at 8th and Figueroa. The 2nd Mitsui tower at 8th and Hope/Grand is not yet under construction.

What is the project everyone is referring to by that name, then--are there stats and renderings? I'm confused. I only found one Mitsui Fudosan project listed on the updated front page here, the 45 story one.

Mojeda, can you change the original post to reflect the 530 ft. height?
